The property

What a magnificent location this house occupies! Overlooking the sandy beach and bay where Bonnie Prince Charlie landed in 1745, a white, shell sprinkled, sandy beach with far reaching views to Barra. Occupying an elevated position, the house is strategically positioned to enjoy the sea in all its changing moods. Unforgettable turquoise waters and white topped waves, the seas around Eriskay are endlessly changing in mood and atmosphere, all of which can be enjoyed from the comfort of this cottage. The accommodation is comprised of the lower part of the house and is suitable for wheelchair access. The upper floor, which has separate external stairs for access, is not let out but may be used from time to time by the owner, but it is completely separate and private. We can advise at your time of booking whether the upper floor will be occupied. Eriskay is connected to South Uist by a short causeway which gives quick and easy access to explore all of the Uists from South to North including Benbecula and Berneray. There are plenty of wonderful sandy beaches, quiet and peaceful even in the height of summer. In the summer, and weather permitting, it is possible to take a boat trip down to the uninhabited islands of Mingulay and Pabbay to see their spectacular cliffs and seabird colonies, on a par with St Kilda. Alternatively, you can just take a short stroll down to the pier and take the ferry across to Barra for the day. The island has a thriving community shop, well stocked with a wide range of foods including locally caught fish, vegetarian and vegan foods and not to be missed, curries from the Indian restaurant on Barra! The shop has a small gift shop and cafe where you can buy locally made crafts. In addition, if you want to order one of the unique Eriskay Jumpers, this is where you can select the colour and size - but as they are hand-knitted on the island to an exacting standard, taking months to create, you may find that there is a 2 year wait! However, it will last you a lifetime and become a family heirloom. From late Spring and through the summer months the islands become flower strews with the wild machair flowers, so beautiful in their colour and profusion. But it is Autumn when, with the lower sun and the heather blooming that the islands really take on a mesmerising hue. Whatever the time of year, the cottage will be a peaceful and comfortable break for your Hebridean journey. The islands can be reached by flights from Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness; or by ferry from Uig on Skye to Lochmaddy, or Oban to Lochboisdale.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £150.

About the location

ERISKAY, SOUTH UIST

Lochboisdale 12 miles

The village of Eriskay is found in the centre of the island of Eriskay which is located between South Uist and Barra. It is connected to South Uist by a causeway and is a delightful place to visit. It is known for being the site of ‘Whisky Galore!’ when in 1941 the SS Politician ran aground here carrying 28,000 cases of malt whisky. The wreck was looted by islanders who allegedly hid the whisky all over Eriskay and South Uist. With a population of around 200, it is a picturesque, hilly island. Prince’s Beach is well worth a visit while on Eriskay and is located on the west side of the island. It is thought to be where Bonnie Prince Charlie first set foot on Scottish soil and the Bonnie Prince Charlie trail is popular with visitors to the island. While you are in Eriskay you can stock up at the community shop and there is even a restaurant called Am Politican here where you can stop off and enjoy a delicious bite to eat.

Note: The bed in bedroom 2 is a twin zip-link as standard. If you require this to be a king-size, please contact us to advise. Note: Please bear in mind this property is on an island so is only accessible by ferry or plane
