Property information

Looking for a family-friendly, spacious and stylish house for that special holiday or get-together? Gateshaw House is perfect! A fine, 19th-century country house set in approximately two acres of mature gardens amid the Cheviot Hills of the Scottish Borders and within easy travelling distance of all locations north, south and west!

This is the perfect place for those needing to accommodate a diverse family group, as there is something to please everyone. Hold that special family gathering or house party at Gateshaw and experience 'big house' living at its best.

The games room ensures entertainment, whatever the weather, with pool, table football, table tennis, Nintendo Wii and PlayStation.

Gateshaw was recently refurbished throughout with the emphasis on family living. There is a superb, hugely spacious living room/kitchen, which becomes the central focus for all parties and in which it is a delight to cook. Alternatively, why not allocate a bedroom for a resident cook to cater for your entire shopping and catering requirements: we can recommend cooks in the area, or who can travel to Gateshaw.

All the principal rooms are well proportioned, beautifully furnished and warm, and on the ground floor each has its own fireplace. The flagstone entrance hall leads through an arch into a stunning reception hall, and from here steps lead up to the formal dining room, which makes this ideal for special event dinners.

The main gardens feature extensive lawns with borders and a rockery, along with a number of mature trees for shelter - and 'hide-and-seek'! There is also an attractive walled garden - the perfect setting for barbecues, or just relaxing and drinking in the peace and quiet of this tranquil glen.

Only a few miles away are the famous market towns of Kelso and Jedburgh with their cashmere boutiques and historic abbeys. The Roxburghe Championship Golf Course, Kelso Racecourse and world-renowned fishing on the River Tweed are major attractions in this area. There are plenty of outdoor pursuits to be enjoyed, including horse riding, fishing, shooting, horse racing, and walking or cycling in the nearby Cheviot Hills. The pretty village of Morebattle, a mile away, has a well-stocked shop, and there is a good butcher in Yetholm (3 miles) which delivers. Also nearby is the Teviot Smokery with its extensive delicatessen and tempting restaurant.

This is our second stay in this beautifully presented house – loved it again! We had a great week of horse riding, cycling, walking, a rib tour and go-karting.
  • Derek Cooper
I have just spent a marvellous few days at Gateshaw House with all my family. We were six adults and six children and there was more than enough space for all of us to have a good time and not feel on top of one another. The house is very spacious and comfortable in every way and the kitchen area is superb and very well equipped. The good weather meant that we were able to barbecue on the terrace on several evenings and watch the beautiful sunsets over the hills. The huge garden kept the children very busy playing games and building dens. The trampoline was a winner (we were told a large climbing frame is on order!) as was the mini-football, table tennis and snooker in the games room. The fact that no –one asked to turn the telly on says it all. It was a very relaxing break.

“Wonderful house for a 4 generation family celebration. Beautifully warm and cosy and so well equipped. Could not have wished for anything nicer.”
  • Anne Telfer
Stayed in lots of houses for our annual walking week but this one far exceeds all others. Warm, comfortable, spacious etc etc. Will certainly pass on the word.
  • Dr K Gaynor
Wonderfully relaxing place. The housemartins were starting their nests as we arrived, and finished as we left - the children were entranced. The lawns offered the children hours of hide and seek, camp building and cricket, while the walled garden made them think they were in a Victorian novel! For parents the genteel bucolic idyll of an ice cold G&T while the bbq warmed up accompanied by the mooing of shaggy Scottish cows on the adjoining hill side was an brilliant antidote to London bustle. Cycling at the nearby mountain biking centre and walking part of St Cuthbert's way were other highlights. Recommend a visit to Born in the Borders too - excellent craft beers and local produce. We will be back!

“A very well equipped and comfortable house in a wonderful location. Despite the April showers we had a wonderful time. One small point, the directions to the house could be improved!”
  • Martin Price
“Stunning house and delightful garden with daffodils in full bloom – couldn’t have asked for better weather – blue skies every day! Perfect place to celebrate 60th birthday with family and friends. Even mastered the rules of croquet! This is the second time we have been to Gateshaw and look forward to a 3rd visit when we have another special event to celebrate. Thank you
  • Hugh Mullan
Thank you for our stay in this lovely house and garden. Everything was very comfortable and we enjoyed the surroundings and the beautiful garden. (I did deadhead a number of lovely roses!) Only the weather could have been nicer!
  • Ruth Cameron
At the beginning of September, our family, 4 childen, partners and 6 grandchildren enjoyed a lovely sunny week in this lovely big house, with such beautiful gardens... we enjoyed eating apple and plum crumble from the apples and plums in the garden... delicious... The games room and kids den was enjoyed by both adults and children alike. There was lots of lovely places to go around the garden and house which meant we didnt feel on top of each other, and all of us had a great time... The kids loved the garden, hide and seek, exploring, treasure hunts, etc., We cooked for us all for the whole week, and the dishwashers were excellent.... We enjoyed Kelso and looking round, visiting several places, gardens and parks... A really good time..

We all enjoyed staying at Gateshaw immensely. We are a large group (6 couples) of golfers who regularly take breaks in self catering properties. It can be very difficult to find the kind and size of property we want/need for our group and it was with great expectations that we arrived at Gateshaw. We were not disappointed. The house is beautiful and definitely feels welcoming and homely. We are all keen cooks (husbands included) and it was a joy to find such a beautiful and well equipped kitchen. Although Aga novices at the start of the week we were soon producing and enjoying fabulous food. The house was also large enough for us to spread out when we needed quiet time alone to read or walk in the huge garden or work off some calories in the gym! Golf in the area was good and we had a very enjoyable trip to the races at Kelso and Sunday lunch at the Roxburgh. All in all a great time. Please pass on my thanks to the house keeper, Linda, who was most helpful on our arrival showing us where everything was and how it all worked. It was comforting to know that she was so close at hand should we have needed her. We felt really 'at home' and this is in no small measure due to the efforts of owner, Mrs Alex Dick and family, whose photographs, books, etc are throughout the house. I have been singing the praises of Gateshaw to all of our friends since we got home - surely an indication of how much we enjoyed our stay. Many thanks again. From Visitors Book

We all had a great week at Gateshaw in July 14 (11 adults & 10 children ). Children loved the downstairs with the games room and the study which they made their den. Garden lovely and plenty of room for football and treasure hunts. Weather was great so had 2 BBQs and over the week we went golfing, riding, cycling, canoeing & river swimming . The house was lovely and suited us perfectly.
  • L Katlan
Our group of 7 adults and 10 kids (including a toddler) spent a great April 2014 week at Gateshaw. The house is very warm and they've thought of everything for kids, cooks and chilling out. The house and garden offer ample space for everyone to get together or find a quiet corner. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and local towns within easy access. For rainy days, we found the many local swimming pools great for all ages. Thoroughly recommend Gateshaw!
  • Ness
We had a lovely October week at Gateshaw House, we were a group of 8 adults and 8 children aged between 5 and 15 years as well as 2 well behaved Golden Retreivers. We were especially impressed by the space available in the house,it is surprisingly warm with sympathetically decorated rooms. The Drawing Room,Kitchen and Master Bedroom are especially impressive. We all spent a lot of time in the kitchen area that has plenty seating to feed kids and adult although we felt most comfortable doing each at separate sittings. The grounds are spacious with a large trampoline which took 8 children and 2 dogs all bouncing about at once.I would love to visit the house in the summer and enjoy al fresco dining. I have no negatives and was pleased that we felt we could relax but the house keeper was available if we needed any help. Kids loved the games room and the basement has great storage for all the bikes we brought.Roxburgh Castle worth a visit and there is a large Sainsburys in Kelso around 8 miles away.WiFi works well in the kitchen and dining room but less so in rest of house.Vodafone reception is variable. There are 2 TV's but would recommend the owners consider multiroom for added luxury but certainly not essential there are so many other things to enjoy in and around this house. Hope we will all return again sometime.
