Definitely not your ordinary holiday house! This is one for those who love history, architecture and atmosphere. The 13 foot thick walls with the staircase encased in them is dramatic and fascinating. Care must be taken on the irregular stone stairs and low overhead stone. Dating back to the 1500's and still owned by the descendants of the first incumbents, the historic timeline is amazing.

Braidwood Castle (also known as Tower of Hallbar) is situated west of the River Clyde and just above Fiddler Burn. Built in 1510 and restored in 1998 it has been successfully let as a holiday house ever since.

The Barony of Braidwood was first granted to John de Montford in 1326 by Robert the Bruce. In 1581, the barony was transferred to Harie Stewart of Gogar, brother of James Stewart of Bothwellmuir, who was briefly Earl of Arran during the insanity of the third earl, James Hamilton. The tower was recorded at this time, making it likely that it was built in response to James V edict that 'tours of fence' be built on all lands over £100 Scots in value. Braidwood and Hallbar with it came into the possession of Lord Maitland of Thirlestane Castle, later passing through the hands of the Marquess of Douglas, before changing hands again in 1681, when it was bought by George Lockhart of Lee Castle whose estate adjoined Braidwood to the south. It remains in the possession of the Lockhart family.

Filled with mystery and fascinating historical features, the tower is an experience in itself. With gargoyles, battlements, low door lintels and a stunning painted ceiling you will be transported back in time and feel the ancient past seep through the 13 foot deep stone walls - so thick in fact that the staircase runs through the walls. What an amazing place for a honeymoon, special birthday treat or as a base to explore the vibrant city of Glasgow, the Scottish Borders and the Ayrshire coast.

Carluke Golf Club, is situated near by in a rural setting above the Clyde Valley rich in history. Carluke is a long established Parkland Course within the boundaries of a former country estate. The course has had considerable improvements over the past few years, challenging the low handicapper, while being fair to the less gifted player. Many of the holes demand a great deal of respect, 'Glenburn' the 11th, a par 3, and 'Hill of Hope' the 12th, a par 4, have been left in many golfers minds for one reason or another. Hopefully, you will have survived and you can look forward to completing an excellent round with the final hole in sight of the 19th hole where an excellent bar and catering facilities are available to you.

The Tower is on 5 floors (ground plus 4 levels) with the master en suite bedroom at the very top. From here there is access to 2 garret walkways on either side of the Tower. The views from this vantage point are amazing across the private orchard, tree tops and farmland. On the 3rd floor is a twin room and on the second floor, a single room.

The Great Hall on the first floor is a marvellous space with a wooden beamed ceiling which is uniquely decorated and features the Lockhart heraldic motifs.

There is a one bedroom cottage with a spacious lounge, double bedroom, shower wet room and kitchen. This is available to be rented as a separate arrangement. See Orchard Cottage on this website.

We have just returned after staying at the Tower of Hallbar with a group of friends and I would definitely go back. Staying in the building is a real experience with its battlements, a staircase that is inside 13ft thick walls and bits of history everywhere you look. The tower also has a small cottage that we had the use of. The cottage and tower were both clean and nicely furnished. I really would recommend this as it is so different to anything else available out there and makes for a fantastic holiday.

Just returned from a great weekend spent at the Tower of Halbar which we booked through Little and Large Holiday Houses a self catering property agent. Got a lovely welcome hamper from the owner Ranald filled with wonderful goodies. The property was clean, very well presented and we took great enjoyment in exploring each level of the tower. The stairs were also a fun challenge especially after a glass or two of wine. The great Hall was very cosy, made even more so with the wood burning stove and the perfect size for the 5 of us. We also had use of the Cottage which was nice and homely. The location is handy for travel from Glasgow and just a short drive to New Lanark where we enjoyed a great walk along the Falls of Clyde and exploring the New Lanark World Heritage site. Would definitely stay at the property again

This was a beautiful place to spend the weekend! The tower is full of character and it was brilliant fun getting to explore the different levels and experience the history of the place. I would fully recommend a stay here to explore the area with attractions such as New Lanark only a few minutes drive away. The building its self was clean and we were provided with a very generous hamper on arrival. an the Bothy next door was perfect for anybody who might be daunted by the archaic stairs! Well worth a trip!
