More information about Shalom Cottage

Property information

The south of Harris is a truly fabulous place for a holiday and Shalom Cottage is a truly fabulous holiday house! This 5 star luxury cottage has an elevated position above the sea and so commands the most dramatic and mesmerising views of sea and islands unsurpassed anywhere on the Hebrides. The owners are especially welcoming to families but, due to a most stunning location, the cottage is an attractive option for couples and individuals seeking a memorable, peaceful and awe inspiring place to enjoy a stress-free holiday.

Shalom Cottage boasts superb panoramic views south east to the Isle of Skye across the Sound of Harris, Uists, Berneray and to where the sun sets in the West over numerous other Hebridean Islands including Pabbay, Killegray, Lingay, Dunarin and Gillesay.

Leverburgh, the main village in South Harris, is just over 2 miles away where there is a well stocked store, restaurant and cafe. Northton, about 6 miles away, has an intriguing Temple Cafe which is well worth a visit and another mile along the road will bring you to the wonderful Scarista beach. Scarista Hotel offer excellent cuisine.

The Isle of Harris is a great place for wildlife on land and in the sea. Walking in the hills, you may surprise a herd of red deer or a golden eagle, while the seashore is home to seals, curlews, shags, cormorants and divers amongst many others. The occasional otter can be spotted making its way through the seaweed and rocks.

On the skyline above Shalom Cottage you will often see a buzzard gliding lazily along and croaking ravens performing their aerial acrobatics. You might even catch a glimpse of a peregrine falcon, but as they fly like bullets you need to be quick! Other moorland birds include golden plover with their mournful, piping cry and snipe, which make an eerie sound at dusk by 'drumming' with their wings. Out to sea, look for gannets winging their way to and from their breeding colony on St Kilda. These tireless fliers can cover hundreds of miles in a day's fishing trip and if there are fish in the Sound you can watch them plummeting vertically into the water, one after another. You may even catch sight of a sea eagle. The tidal creeks at Carminish are home to a variety of waders including curlews, oyster-catchers, red shanks and sandpipers. Could even the keenest bird watcher wish for more?

Shalom Cottage caters very well for families and there are plenty of games and books for children as well as outdoor equipment and beach toys. Nursery equipment is supplied on request including cot with linen, highchair, baby monitor, changing mat, and steriliser.

16 to 23 Sept 2017. Just had a fantastic week in this fabulous house. Every possible item is here! Well done. Thanks for the lovely welcome we had - much appreciated. Highly recommend to all our friends and family - would love to return one day.

Absolutely well deserved 5* cottage with amazing views. A must for wildlife watchers. Relaxing, cozy, warm home from home with everything you require. Well stocked shop 5 minutes drive away ( Coop ) Beaches everywhere. A holiday loved by myself and my dogs. Really does have the best views on the island, and will return.

We have stopped in several cottages in the area but this cottage has the edge in many ways. It is a beautiful location facing out onto the Sound of Harris benefitting from an elevated site above the general property in the area. It is wonderfully equipped with everything that you need for a fully self catered holiday. The accommodation is pristine and works very well to keep everyone connected whether resting, reading, cooking or eating the splendidly aspected main room combines all functions seamlessly. The windows also give a variety of views along the hillside and out to sea. The balcony adds another dimension to eating and relaxing as it sits majestically in front of the picture windows to the lounge with panoramic views to die for. The bedrooms are set to the rear with side views still providing sea views thank to the property's elevation. They are a comfortable size and there is totally adequate storage. The bathroom is exceptional with a double shower and a Jacuzzi bath perfect for relaxing after a long walk on the hills and enough space to hold a party in! The utility room provides washing and ironing facilities with ample storage for coats and shoes, it is really well appointed with storage cupboards too. The equipment in the kitchen is better than most domestic kitchens although the cooker can be a challenge to the technophobe! The external boiler room provides extra space for drying of clothes and space for the recycling ensuring uncluttered main accommodation very useful if the weather is less than cooperative. The heating is fully adaptable and can provide everything from cool to sauna and there is no limit on the usage. The owner is accessible and nothing is too much trouble if you want that extra thing or you need something explaining. We could not think of anything that could be improved. We have been stopping at the cottage for several years now at its standards have never dropped. We strongly recommend this property if you want the best house in the area and what a beautiful area it is!

Just back from a fabulous week at Shalom Cottage. Arrived to find bread, oatcakes, quiche, salmon, fresh orange and a chilled bottle of white wine - just lovely. Cottage very comfortable with beautiful views, and the owners were so accommodating and helpful, even dropping us off and picking us up from The Anchorage after a meal on our last night there. Couldn't have asked for anything better, and we'll definitely be back.
  • Soo Spector
We have just returned from the most fantastic week at Shalom Cottage. Everything was perfect. The cottage is extremely comfortable and the owners ensure that their guests lack nothing they need. The views, the people, the whole place is sublime. We are already planning our next trip.
