More information about Down House

Property information

Down House is one of two timber cottages set in a delightful sylvan setting in five acres of private cliff-top woodland. The woodland is at its best in the spring when a succession of primroses, wood anemones and bluebells may be seen and in the autumn when the colours are superb. In the winter there are views from the cottage of the loch and mountains beyond. The architect designed cottage has French doors in the living room which open out onto a timber deck that faces south and west and the double bedroom also has south-facing patio doors. The cottage has a woodburning stove and you will arrive to find a basket of logs, with further logs available to purchase. There is also electric heating, though as the cottage has been designed to ecological standards with double glazing and good insulation, little extra heating is required. The village of Diabeg is a small crofting community beyond Bealach na Gaoithe, one of the most beautiful west Highland passes, from which there are stunning views of Ben Alligin, Liathach and Upper Loch Torridon as well as south to Applecross and Skye. From Diabeg there is easy access to the Torridon Mountains for hill walking and there are also many fine cliff-top and lochside walks in the area. The village is home to the excellent Gillie Bridhde restaurant, set on the shore of the picturesque Diabeg Bay.

The roads in this area are typical single track winding roads which cannot be travelled at speed and you should allow extra time for the last 10 miles which is particularly slow.

As we told our lovely hosts Mary and Mervyn, Down House in Diabaig is a piece of heaven. The accommodation, the amenities, the hospitality and the the natural surroundings well surpassed our expectations, needs and wishes. We have fallen head over heels in love with the Scottish Highlands. And will most definitely be your returning customers in the future. Both at Down House and hopefully some of your other accommodations.

Mary & Mervyn have created Down House as the most perfect retreat to get away from it all. Everything you could possibly need has been provided for, and of course the scenery is stunning. The changing moods of the weather gives you many different views of the loch as seen from the house, which all makes for an exciting holiday, with so much to do and see in the area.

We stayed at down house early May and it was absolutely stunning! The views are amazing, you can see through the trees to the loch and it was so relaxing to sit in bed watching the birds and admiring the view in the morning. It is beautifully furnished and the bed was very comfortable, the kitchen had all we needed for our stay, we like to cook. There is a deck with outside seating which was a lovely place to sit with coffee or wine in the evening. The location is very private and you can walk down to the little rocky beach in the village where there is a very good restaurant (check opening times). The local area is simply beautiful, lots of walks and stunning drives. The hosts were very friendly, helpful and made us feel at home, we would certainly recommend Down house and hope to return one day. Thank you for a wonderful holiday.

This is a beautiful cabin in the woods. The interior is lovely, the bed is comfortable (which is always a bonus in a holiday rental) and is very peaceful and quiet for that relaxing retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The only let down - in our opinion - are the amount of trees obscuring the views which would be panoramic if you could see them. As it is there are only snapshots of the loch and the Applecross Peninsular beyond. So the picture on here is obviously an older one. Having said that, I would go again as the other positives more than outweigh the tree issue.

A beautiful wooden house so sensitively built within the woods that we felt as though we were living in a tree house! Amazing views from both the bedroom and living room. We’ll be back!
  • Merri Hall
This is a lovely house, with fantastic views. We had such a lovely, relaxing holiday that we didn't want to come home !
  • Harvey
A pretty little wooden house in the woods with a beautiful view over the sea loch. Quiet cosy bliss.
