The property

Studio House has an enviable position, overlooking Scapa Flow, nestled within the historic fishing village of St Margaret’s Hope on South Ronaldsay. Known locally as ‘The Hope’ it is the third largest settlement on Orkney. Studio House is within easy walking distance to shops, an art gallery, places to dine; including a local pub and coffee shop. The unassuming exterior of this 18th century house gives no hint to the interior within, which has been restyled to create a bright, relaxing, quirky and cosy home. The downstairs area encompasses a contemporary, compact and well-equipped kitchen, a dining area positioned in front of one of the windows and a cosy snug area with comfortable, adjustable sofa, ottoman and multi-fuel stove. No matter where you position yourself you cannot help but be drawn towards the views of the sea from every window. The clever styling throughout will soon draw your attention back, for example, the feature wall lighting installation, from a repurposed wooden lintel, is inspirational. Browse through the book selection provided for local information to plan your days ahead whilst enjoying the warmth of the stove. The bright and airy bedroom is accessed by the spiral staircase. Each window has sea views bringing light in to the room. The bed is positioned so that when reclined in bed it is possible to experience the changing light of the Orkney sky. Open the windows to hear the water lap on the shore, the bird calls and to appreciate the wonderful sea air. At low tide the beach in front of the house provides an opportunity for beachcombing. High tide provides easy access to the water which is so tempting for swimmers or paddlers who want to explore the coastline. Accessed by steps to the side of the house is a community garden, it is a tranquil spot to read or pass through on the way to the shop, pub, café or restaurant. With a short drive it is easily possible to explore the Neolithic sites and Brochs that are situated throughout Orkney. A visit to the Italian Chapel is memorable. Continue across the Churchill barriers to the main towns Kirkwall and Stromness which offer an interesting and varied selection of shops, restaurants and places of interest. At the end of an exhilarating day, return to Studio House to relax, rejuvenate in the spa-like rainfall shower room, enjoy the sunset and just be. You will treasure your time here. St Margaret’s Hope is a village resting on the island of South Ronaldsay the fourth largest island in the Orkney Isles. St Margaret’s Hope is the third largest settlement after Kirkwall and Stromness. Known locally as the ‘Hope’ or the ‘Hup, the picturesque village is home to around 550 people and is the perfect place to enjoy a stroll. Just west of the village at the Sands O’Wright is the stunning coast at Hoxa Head where you can enjoy breath-taking views of the Scapa Flow.
