“A wonderful cottage near the sea.”

Beautifully presented, very well-equipped and cosy - we loved the steaming hot shower after Easter sea swims! Perfect for our family of four, the Barn was just as lovely as the photos but felt even more light and spacious in person. Within a short walk of stunning Riof beach, we appreciated the proximity to sights but loved returning to this peaceful spot. Excellent communication from the owner - book without hesitation!

The property

Tucked into the side of a hillock, south facing on the northern shore of West Loch Roag, is this perfectly formed, beautifully appointed, gem of a holiday cottage just waiting to welcome and refresh you. The Barn at Reef is an exquisite restoration of a former byre, which has been lovingly and artistically furnished and decorated. The result is warm, relaxing, aesthetically pleasing and an absolute pleasure in which to enjoy your Hebridean holiday. A perfect mix of traditional and quality, contemporary furnishings and artefacts which are inspired by the islands and its traditions. Those who know the whole Uig peninsula need no reminder of the many stunning beaches (24 in total) and Riof beach is arguably the finest, with white shell sand, fabulous machair flowers backing the dunes and turquoise water. It is truly breath-taking. There is a necklace of beaches, each with their own charm and for the surfer, Cliff beach is ideal with its amazing rollers pounding in. Slightly further north is Great Bernera where a visit to Bosta beach is a must (try to get there when the ‘climate change bell’ rings) and don’t miss the Iron Age museum. Wildlife and bird watchers will be well rewarded for their patience as there is a multitude of species to see, most notable are the eagles, both sea eagles and golden eagles and in fact, the picture here on the website was captured by our photographer whilst taking the photographs of the house in May 2017. It really is impossible to convey all that this corner of Lewis offers, and also in the area surrounding the cottage, which would more than fill a holiday week. However, if you can tear yourself away and venture into the Uig Hills, if walking is your passion, you will be rewarded with fabulous views. From these remote summits you can see forever – well at least as far as St Kilda and the great expanse of the Atlantic. Uig has a well-stocked community shop where you can buy all the supplies you need. The community hall café offers lunches and the most delicious home baking and there is a small but fascinating island museum here. Fresh seafood is also available from the nearby harbour at Miavaig. Whatever you decide to do, wherever your interests take you, The Barn at Reef will become that unique and peaceful retreat you will be eager to return to – time and time again… The islands can be reached by flights from Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness; or by ferry from Uig on Skye to Tarbert, or Ullapool to Stornoway.
