  • Mrs Cox

“Very comfortable and pretty much everything we needed.”

Just a couple of minor improvements would be to provide a hairdryer and an adaptor to enable shaver charging. Otherwise all perfect including the weather

The property

Taigh Dhonnchaidh (Duncan's House) is the perfect family holiday house with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, plenty of outdoor space to sit outside and take in the views and best of all - just a short walk to a huge sandy beach the perfect place to exercise you dog or for just peaceful beachcombing. If you are interested in fishing there are excellent lochs and permits are available. Peninerine is situated in the middle portion of South Uist giving easy access, without too much driving, up to North Uist or down to the Isle of Eriskay and on to Barra for a daytrip. South Uist is still steeped in the local, traditional and cultural activities which you can see and visit. Indeed, you need go no further than the sun-room to see a display of historic photographs of, and books by, the Gaelic poet and philosopher Domhnall Iain Dhonnchaidh, a noted Bard, who is commemorated with a stone monument on the island. This was the house he stayed in, raised his family in and which is still owned by the family. This is a perfect family home, comfortable, relaxing and equipped with all you need for a great holiday. Peninerine and area is ideal for those with a love of birds as it is the breeding ground for several species both well known and more rare. South Uist is quite often the resting place for more exotic birds on their migration routes such as Cackling Geese, a rare but regular visitor. Foodies will enjoy the Uist Food Trail which includes some of the best seafood you can find - fresh from the clear waters around the islands. There are various cafes and hotels open for meals and local bakery goods are a must. The owners stay just along the road and are on hand to advise you on the islands and what they have to offer. Two dogs are welcome but please do be aware that sheep are not fenced in and roam freely over the islands. Also, there are ground nesting birds on the machair in spring so please do be aware of this when exercising your dog. The islands can be reached by flights from Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness; or by ferry from Uig on Skye to Lochmaddy, or Oban to Lochboisdale.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £150.

About the location

ISLE OF BENBECULA

Lochmaddy 16 miles.

Benbecula is one of the isles of the Outer Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland, and is connected to its neighbours, North and South Uist, by a series of causeways. The main town on Benbecula is Balivanich, which hosts shops, cafes and Post Office, as well as being home to Benbecula Airport. Scattered across the island are many fresh water and sea lochs and moorland, so there are ample opportunities for some fishing and wildlife spotting. At the shores of the island, the Atlantic coasts boasts wide white beaches and sand dunes which add to the remote and peaceful nature of the area. An easy drive from Benbecula, Lochmaddy, the main town of North Uist, is home to a museum, arts centre and is also the main ferry terminal for the three islands. North Uist is renowned for its birdlife and the RSPB maintains a nature reserve at Balranald. Many prehistoric structures are scattered throughout the islands, adding to the mysterious atmosphere of these remote and beautiful landscapes.

Note: If you bring a pet, please be aware of ground nesting birds on the machair in spring. Note: Bring own linen for travel cot. Note: Though electricity is included in the rent, electric for charging cars is not included in the rental. Note: Please bear in mind that this property is located on an island and therefore only accessible by plane or ferry.

Please note: From the beginning of 2024 the property will no longer accept pets.
