“We were not aware of how isolated this property is.”

If the weather stops you from walking then you have a long drive across difficult roads to get anywhere and we did stay at the property rather than go out one rainy day. Having said that the property was very comfortable and very well equipped. It’s just not for us.

The property

Down House is one of two timber cottages set in a delightful sylvan setting in five acres of private cliff-top woodland. The woodland is at its best in the spring when a succession of primroses, wood anemones and bluebells may be seen and in the autumn when the colours are superb. Every season offers different, but still stunning views from the cottage of the loch and mountains beyond. The architect designed cottage has French doors in the living room which open out onto a timber deck that faces south and west. There is a woodburning stove and you will arrive to find a basket of logs, with further logs available to purchase. There is also electric heating, though as the cottage has been designed to ecological standards with double glazing and good insulation, little extra heating is required. The village of Diabeg is a small crofting community beyond Bealach na Gaoithe, one of the most beautiful west Highland passes, from which there are stunning views of Ben Alligin, Liathach and Upper Loch Torridon as well as south to Applecross and Skye. From Diabeg there is easy access to the Torridon Mountains for hill walking and there are also many fine cliff-top and lochside walks in the area. The village is home to the excellent Gillie Bridhde restaurant, set on the shore of the picturesque Diabeg Bay. EPC Rating: Band E
