  • "We have just spent a week in the Hebridean Earth House and have thoroughly enjoyed our time there."

The accommodation was excellent and had everything we required. The house is warm and bright with a lovely view. We obtained a fishing permit for the loch and caught lovely brown trout for dinner one evening. I managed a swim in the loch which was delightful and especially nice being able to sit outside afterwards enjoying the view with a hot drink. Sarah Jane is a fantastic host and very friendly and knowledgeable. She answered all our queries promptly and helped make our stay memorable. We plan to return.

  • "Earth House was really fabulous in every way, can’t fault it at all."

Sarah Jane was very welcoming on arrival and equally so on departure when we thought we were going to have to stay on Uist a bit longer due to ferry cancellations. Highly recommend and thank you.

  • "Fantastic location, beautiful, comfortable house."

A very special place to stay. The host personally welcomed us at the house and gave us a very detailed list of great recommendations for places to visit all around Uist. She was absolutely lovely and extremely helpful and sorted an issue with an item of luggage we had accidentally left behind very swiftly and efficiently and without any fuss. She went the extra mile for us and we very much appreciate it. We'll definitely be back next year.

  • "Where to start…."

. The Hebridean Earth House far exceeded our expectations. From the moment we arrived, Sarah Jane met us and explained everything within the house. She also provided a comprehensive set of suggestions for places to eat and things to do. The house itself is so well equipped, we literally wanted for nothing. The standard of fixtures and fittings is excellent for a holiday cottage; no cheap bed linen or crockery here! There’s even a washing machine/tumble dryer and dishwasher within the kitchen. The setting is fabulous - on the side of a loch (bring insect repellent in summer) and tucked away from the outside world. Would we return? Yes, without hesitation.

A great place to explore the Outer Hebrides from, and a lovely, peaceful and unusual home to return to after a day exploring this stunning part of the world.

  • "We had a very relaxing time here and loved the Hebridean Earth house."

Right beside the loch and very close to the beach. Also close to the Hebridean Way for walking and cycling would definitely recommend a holiday here. Everything you need local Coop, hotel. Cannot wait to go back.

  • "An absolutely wonderful retreat in a stunningly beautiful area."

No otters sadly, but lovely to hear the cuckoo and a great view of a short eared owl at Lochboisdale. The beaches are wonderful and we’ve explored some lovely walks passed the golf course. Well worth the trip to Barra via the ferry from Eriskay (book in advance as it doesn’t take that many vehicles). Can recommend the café at Kildbride on the way to Eriskay causeway. A bit further afield (30mins) the Orasay Inn is worth seeking out for lovely seafood (and other choices). Or just chill out in this beautiful house and garden. Many thanks.

  • "Yes we have enjoyed our stay despite the wild weather."

Every day we have seen a wonderful place; South Uist, Eriskay, Barra and Vatersay, North Uist, Benbecula and Berneray. Earth House is a fantastic place to relax. Many thanks for the great welcome pack. We would like to come again, we wish you all the best Sarah Jane.

  • "What a fascinating house in a lovely situation."

We have had a perfect week; blessed with good weather, fabulous seafood plenty of flora and fauna. The only trouble is, seven adults and eight grandchildren all want to come next year. Sarah Jane, please build a bigger house!

  • "We have had an amazing fortnight in this utterly fabulous earth house."

We explored Harris, Barra, Eriskay, Vatersay, North Uist, Benbecula, Berneray and of course our beloved South Uist. We were so. so lucky to see a golden eagle, buzzards, short eared owls, yellow bumblebee and icing on the cake an otter swimming on the loch on our last night. Thank you Sarah Jane for enabling us to savour this little piece of heaven in South Uist. We are looking forward to returning in July next year.

  • "We have thoroughly enjoyed our return visit to the Earth House and been blessed with the windy but mainly dry week for plenty of superb beach walks discovering two new favourites at Traigh Lingay Clachan Sands and Traigh Stir near the Clettraval viewpoint turning to add to Eriskay and the local beaches here."

A week has gone far too quickly and we leave with more we wanted to see and didn’t have time for. Ah well, we may have to come back again soon! Thanks for the amazing welcome pack; good to meet you Sarah Jane.

  • "We came here to relax and get away from everything and that is exactly what we did!"

The Earth House is so warm and cosy we found it hard to explore but we did eventually. Thank you Sarah Jane for letting us stay here. You are a great host and very welcoming and helpful. We are already planning our next visit to the Hebridean Earth House.

  • "July 2017 We managed to see an otter right on the beach close to the house – it was a joy."

We recommend a wonderful walk Caolas Mor right at the end of Loch Druidibeag Road, incredible coastal views of the Isle of Skye in the background and sea eagles flying over our heads. Amazing! For those of you into foraging, go to Glendale at low tide…muscles and cockles ready to be dug up easily. Interested in fresh fish? Go to Barra and stop at Barra- Atlantic shop, just after the ferry. We will miss the view of this wonderful house. Thinking of coming back already!

  • "May 2018 A wonderful week!"

This is the most fantastic base to relax and then go explore the islands. We have climbed Ben Mor, walked in Eriskay and explored North Uist and Benbecula. Each afternoon returning to this little luxury oasis to sit in the sun and watch and listen to the wildlife. The house has provided everything we could have needed and the weather has been amazing (It was good to get the rainy day out of the way early). I would recommend the beach out near Lingay on North Uist.

  • "June 2018 What an amazing house in a fabulous location."

Everything is quality! South Uist is a lovely island and we managed to visit Eriskay, Benbecula and North Uist. The weather was fine. We have had a lovely anniversary week. Would love to return.

  • "We spent a very comfortable week at the Earth House in June 2018."

Sarah-Jane, the owner, met us personally and showed us around which made us feel very welcome and at home. Although set into the hill the back of the house is lit with natural light and the full-length windows at the front give a lovely view over the loch outside. The waterlilies were just starting to flower outside when we were there and we also saw a great deal of wildlife including the otters, a golden eagle and a cuckoo. The house is finished to a very high standard with a lot of luxury touches that made us feel truly pampered. We spent a lot of time just relaxing and taking in the view, but also found it a good base from which to explore the islands, from Berneray down to Eriskay. Would highly recommend to anyone and hope to return.

  • "We spent a long weekend in the Earth House."

The house itself is stunning with lovely touches of White Company bed linen, Molton Brown hand creams, smoked salmon in the fridge. Sarah-Jane was a fantastic host who was on whats app to answer any questions. If you are looking to truly switch off, relax and take in the beauty of South Uist, we could not recommend this enough! It was a special weekend here for us as we got engaged, so this little home will always have a special place in our hearts.

  • "December 2016."

An amazing experience staying in this totally unique Earth House. I slept more deeply than I have for years and woke up to a mesmerising sight of a red sunrise reflected on the water in front of the house. If you are looking for luxury and uniqueness then this is it. South Uist is beautiful even when the weather became a bit wild! Visited Eriskay and found that equally stunning. A super shop on Eriskay too. I stayed here on my own and felt completely safe and relaxed. Long walks on the beach with the dog topped my stay. Can't wait to return.

  • "It's hard to say what impressed us more, the delightfully unusual property itself, or the stunning location with its lochside views."

The house is well equipped and very tastefully decorated, with a truly unforgettable view from the bedroom and main lounge, while the small patio area and substantial garden were perfect when the weather warmed up. This is a really special place, secluded and peaceful and with some of the best beaches imaginable close to hand.

  • "What an amazing place, I stayed in June 2017 and loved every minute."

The wonderful welcome by Sarah Jane the owner, the luxury of the earth house, the stunning scenery and beaches the Caribbean would be envious of and the total chill out relaxation and holistic treatments by Sheila added to a perfect week. A place which is very good for the soul.

  • "Well due to circumstances we had to shorten our stay at both ends of our week."

We wished we'd Not! Even four days though was a total relaxation. Nothing is spared here. Luxury in perfect miniature underground. Cuckoo! We will miss you. Otters come and see us next time please. Sun and wind and rain and history and endless sand dunes abound here. Thank you!

  • "Simply the best accommodation for a couple on the island."

The bed being quite tiny, be prepared to get close to your partner again. Charming, romantic, quiet, great view over the loch, nevertheless thoroughly functional place close to a hidden gem of a golf course with the potential of being one of the world's best and exceptional links. LHH NOTE: The bed is a double bed.

  • "I stayed one week in the Earth House end of March 2017."

The house was fantastic as well the weather. It is a best equipped house in a extraordinary surrounding, landscape and beaches. I can recommend it to everyone who is looking for silence and nature in very good living conditions.

  • "2nd time in this unique place, far away from a bustling world."

A hideout in rough nature setting, and environmentally friendly - love this house's roof being a living space for plants and animals. The house itself was immaculate condition, plesant bathroom with plenty of towels, fully-equipped kitchen incl washers. A comprehensive co-op store near by. Our host was friendly and always helped out in case of questions and ferry bookings. Drawback: Wish to visit again exceeds available time ;-)

The property

Daliburgh 1.7 miles.

Peeking through the hillside of Askernish, near Daliburgh, Scotland, a beautiful hidden gem emerges into sight, overlooking stunning waterscapes, Hebridean Earth House is truly a stunning property, nestling below ground and with a beautiful glass front greeting you on arrival.

Perfect for honeymooners and couples looking for a taste of the wilderness of the Highlands, this property offers both a secluded spot amongst the landscape and opulence within such a wonderfully decorated space.

Marvelling at the beauty of the glass front of the property, you will not be disappointed by what awaits you inside.

With a Polar Wall construction, a delightful warmth encompasses the inside, and you will be surprised to see how light this property is, despite being underground, and this is achieved through solar tubes bringing light from the surface above.

Once you are inside you will be met with a welcome hamper to make your stay feel extra special!

A perfect sitting room offers you a place to recline, and you will simply adore the white painted walls and how they contrast perfectly with the leather furniture, wooden flooring, artwork and of course the beautiful wooden roof, a feature seen in many traditional cottages throughout the Highlands, and the glass front of the building allows you to relax before the calming plasma fire whilst still enjoying the spectacular views that this property has to offer.

With such tasteful décor, it is no wonder that the kitchen offers the same opulence in a small but perfectly fitted space, where all of the home comforts needed to cook up a storm are available for use, and the marble look work surface and green wooden furniture add a mixture of traditional and contemporary design, finished off by a magnificent giant clock.

Enjoying a window to the outside world and a gently sloping ceiling, the snug dining area offers seating for four, the perfect place to try out local cuisine cooked in the splendid kitchen.

When the evening draws to a close, find yourself snuggled up in the airy double bedroom, with a fresh feel to the décor as well as wooden furniture and a delightful blossom-shaped wall lamp, and if you wish to freshen up before beginning your Highland adventure, enjoy a shower in the amply fitted modern bathroom, using the bathrobes provided.

With a stunning view of a loch and an insight into the flourishing nature of the island, you are bound to be using the outdoor sitting area as often as you can, with breath-taking views and a feel of wilderness and remoteness enveloping you as you enjoy a glass of your favourite tipple, watching the sunny sky become strewn with stars as the sun goes down and you may even be able to see the Northern Lights.

Right next to the house, you will also experience some of the stunning wildlife of the area, including otters and cuckoos, as well as the beautiful machair flowers that sprinkle the island in colour from May to August.

The Isle of South Uist is one where historical sites come in abundance, due to such a rich heritage and culture throughout the islands, and so there are plenty of opportunities to explore local sites such as Ormaclait Castle and An Carra Standing Stone, as well as the local Kildonan Museum.

The local area also offers great walks, for example through Arinaban woodland, sandy beaches for watersports and wild swimming, and Askernish Golf Course!

The nearby town of Daliburgh is where you will be able to stock up on supplies at the local store or grab a bite to eat at one of the pubs, cafes and restaurants, before heading off to explore the stunning coastline of the island.

An amazing property in a simply breath-taking location, Hebridean Earth House is bound to make an unforgettable stay at the Isle of South Uist.

The islands can be reached by flights from Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness; or by ferry from Uig on Skye to Lochmaddy, or Oban to Lochboisdale.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.
