  • Mr Fletcher

“This was a lovely cottage in a fabulous location.”

There is a small harbour and a small beach right on the doorstep. Huge white sandy beaches close by. Our dog was in heaven and did not want to come home. We lucked out and the weather was gloriously sunny. Recently refurbished cottage would be comfortable any time however.

The property

Taigh Tharmoid Ruaidh and Taigh Eachainn are two Hebridean cottages which make up 28 Bhaltos, which can be let either individually or together. Taigh Tharmoid Ruaidh forms a spacious one-bedroom cottage, with additional bunk beds in snug off the hall, close to Bhaltos beach and the sea loch. Just a short walk down from the cottage is the old harbour and jetty with access to a white sand beach. The Bhaltos peninsula is one of the most spectacular areas of Lewis and the cottage is ideal for anyone looking to combine walking, kayaking, sailing and wild swimming. Even surfers will be happy at the nearby Cliff beach. Riof beach is a mile long, shell sand, beach backed by dunes and machair. The machair is full of colourful flowers in late spring and summer including Scottish bluebells in profusion, birds foot trefoil, orchids, eyebright, sea bindweed and corn marigold, just to mention a few. It really is a stunning display. The cottage was newly renovated in 2019 and is comfortably appointed for a relaxing stay. If you need slightly larger accommodation there is a second cottage, Taigh Eachainn, a 2 bedroom cottage. The two cottages can be let either separately or together. There is a sound proofed connecting door and corridor linking the two cottages. If you fancy viewing the coast from the water rather than the land there is boat hire available nearby. Rich in wildlife and history this fascinating island offers the opportunity to see golden eagles, sea otters, red deer and various sea birds; while the standing stones at Callanish date back over 5,000 years and are second only to Stonehenge. With a well stocked community shop nearby and a community centre that also houses a museum and cafe you will be well catered for in this area but with Stornoway just over 45 minutes drive north and Harris approximately an hour and a half south you will be able to explore the whole island from this comfortable base. The islands can be reached by flights from Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness; or by ferry from Uig on Skye to Tarbert, or Ullapool to Stornoway.

EPC Rating: Band D
