  • "A wonderful house in a beautiful location."

We absolutely loved our stay at Achnacloich, it felt magical. We loved exploring the grounds, especially all of the nooks and viewpoints with benches, and we had fun rowing out to the island. The house felt very authentic and we found it a really interesting place to spend time and explore, rather than simply a place to stay! The living room felt cosy and had great views, and we thought the set up of the kitchens and dining room worked well and made it less of a challenge to feed so many people! Overall a great place to stay and we would absolutely recommend :)

  • "The property was lovely and facilities were fine."

There was no water supply for half a day due to some supply issue and we managed as these things are sometimes not under someone’s control although it was hard with kids. There was no filter or drinking water. We expected a bit more friendly and polite behaviour from the care taker and how she she behaved on the day we left was not appreciated. No one expects the property to be spot clean before leaving. We were delayed by an hour and due to which we faced issues on the road due to heavy snow. So feedback is the care taker has to be more friendly and we accepted all the issues smilingly she should also behave the same way.

  • "What a Heavenly spot!"

We loved all of the space in the house, the magnificent gardens and the coastal setting. Swimming and rowing to and from the island each day was a real highlight. We do hope to have the opportunity to return again.

  • "This was our second year at Achnachloich."

Group of 10. It is a fantastic property. Lots of space, kitchen has everything you need, all well maintained and lots of character. Loads to do in the surrounding area helped by a fantastic week of weather.

  • "Fabulous property, amazing grounds, we had a fabulous stay over the new year period."

A few points on what could have been better. The property was freezing cold on arrival and it took a few days to heat up. The host Wendy was very helpful and changed the heating settings. One of the guests went out and bought a heater for their bedroom. It would be good to invest in a longer tv aerial to allow the tv to be watched from the comfortable sofas around the living room. We felt the pictures made the property look plush but instead it was more ‘shabby chic’.

  • "Great house for a family holiday."

perhaps a note to say the boathouse and jetty are a 'difficult' walk away........we had some wee ones with us and hadn't appreciated the tricky access.

  • "On behalf of all my friends who joined me at Achnacloich House last week, I want to thank you and your team for making our stay so wonderful."

As I think I have said before, we have been gathering for this kind of holiday every October since the year 2000, staying at various large houses all over Scotland. We are all agreed that Achnacloich is just about the best house we have stayed in.

  • "We are a group of 15 hillwalkers, all male, and we have stayed in the Highlands and Islands for a long weekend in February for many years, at different houses each time."

In 2018 we stayed at Achnacloich, and I think the whole group agreed that this was possibly the best house we have stayed in. Wendy the housekeeper was friendly and helpful. We found the house to be comfortable, clean, warm and welcoming. The catering facilities were very good, and there were plenty of bathrooms, hot water and logs for the fire. There is also plenty of walking on hand at all levels - from several Munros in easy striking distance, to easy low level walks, and interesting island walks on Lismore and Kerrera for example. Thoroughly recommended for a group such as ours, or for families.

  • "Great house with large fantastic gardens leading down to the shore."

Wonderful views, marvellous sunsets and the availability of little rowboat boat for trips out to the island was a great bonus. We loved it.

  • "A magical place - space, warmth, incredible views, stunning flora, invigorating swimming in the loch."

A unique opportunity for such a large group to all sit and eat around one table and in such style. Attention to detail from benches placed in scenic locations to all necessary cooking utensils. A perfect time and place to celebrate 60 year birthdays, treasure old friendships and make new ones.

  • "Superb house and grounds with everything you want, boat, island, billiard room, great company and excellent food."

Children had a great adventure. Views from Easdale were stunning in the Autumn sun. Not far for us but a superb time away with friends.

  • "We have had a marvelous time and have been blessed with super autumnal weather, love, friendships of friends and family."

We have climbed two Munro's, cycled on Lismore, strolled on Kerrera, fished and had lunch at the restaurant Pier House. Backgammon, 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle, snooker and so much more.

  • "We've now stayed 5 times in Achnacloich and it is always a privilege to be able to enjoy this fabulous house and stunning grounds."

The beds and bedrooms are great, bathrooms are plentiful with loads of reliable hot water, there is a lovely spacious kitchen with excellent storage for a large group like ours. Drying room also very useful for our walking parties! The property is very well looked after and has always been spotlessly clean upon our arrival. It's one of our favourite places to stay in Scotland. We shall return year on year!

The property

Connel 3.5 miles.

If you fancy yourself as lord or lady of the manor then you’ve come to the right place.

Achnacloich in Argyll and Bute, is a strikingly beautiful country house set within a stunning 500 acre country estate on the shores of Loch Etive and is just perfect for large family gatherings or as a venue for a reunion of old friends.

Dating back to the mid-19th century, the house is literally bursting with original features and character and the grandeur of the property oozes from every part of the building.

Walk into the huge entrance hall and it is like stepping back in time.

The generous drawing room could be straight out of the set of Downton Abbey and boasts feature windows designed to showcase the stunning views, wood flooring and a wealth of original features.

Recline on one of the pristine sofas in front of a roaring open log fire and you really can transport yourself to another time but with all the mod cons of the 21st century of course!

A smaller sitting room offers a more snug experience and talking of relaxing, check out the fantastic games room with full-size snooker table and there is also a play room.

It would be a shame not to make use of the formal dining room which has an abundance of traditional features so why not rustle up a banquet (or just a simple meal!) in one of the two spacious kitchens?

Imagine sitting down around the giant dining table and enjoying a candlelit meal with loved ones – it really is the perfect setting.

With nine bedrooms to choose from there is a boudoir for everyone including twin and double bedrooms as well as children’s bunk beds and there’s no shortage of bathrooms either.

The adventure doesn’t stop there with extensive grounds to explore including formal lawns, shrubbery areas, woodlands, a children’s play area and a brick-built barbecue, perfect for balmy evenings spent outdoors, eating, drinking and soaking up the wonderful views over the estate and Loch Etive beyond.

Tempting as it is to spend the whole holiday exploring Achnacloich and its grounds, there is so much else on offer right on the doorstep so what adventures await?

If you love the great outdoors then there are a number of superb cycling routes nearby, golf courses at Oban, Taynuilt and Dalmally, mountain climbing and hill walking, brown trout fishing and salmon fishing (by arrangement) and boat trips on the loch.

The town of Oban has loads to offer or you could hop a boat over to one of the adjoining islands such as Mull, Iona and Staffa.

Achnacloich is a country house with character, style, elegance and most importantly, space.
