The property

Achnacloich was built by John Starforth of Glasgow and has been in the current owner's family since 1890. This magnificent house sits in the middle of a 5,000 acre estate and is immediately surrounded by 30 acres of the most wonderful and magical gardens. A short stroll from the house brings you to elevated viewing point giving panoramic views across Loch Etive to the mountains beyond. Children are welcome and there are great outdoor play facilities including 3 swings, climbing frame and climbing rope as well as a nursery with toys, books and DVDs. A place to enjoy and store up memories for years to come. Achnacloich House and gardens occupy a commanding position on a promontory, overlooking Loch Etive, with impressive views to the west towards Mull and Morvern and to the north to the mighty Ben Cruachan (3760ft). The 20-acre woodland garden has been knowledgeably planted over the last century with a wide range of trees and shrubs from the temperate regions of Asia, China, Japan, North America, Chile and New Zealand. Many have grown to considerable size in the mild, west coast climate, helped by the Gulf Stream. There are open glades carpeted with bluebells and numerous other bulbs. Two separate ponds with attendant streams are planted with primulas, interesting iris species, lysichitum, and other wetland plants. The woodland contains innumerable species of rhododendron and azalea, of which the triflorum series: yunnanense, augustinii etc. are quite outstanding and of unusual size. Apart from the plants, perhaps the most enduring feature of the garden is its position, surrounded on three sides by Loch Etive, which you constantly glimpse through the trees as you walk around, and the varied bird life which comes with proximity to the sea. The sea eagle is a common sight, as are red squirrels and in the spring can be heard the distinctive call of the numerous eider ducks which frequent the Abbot's Isle, which the garden overlooks. Aside from the obvious attractions of the house and gardens and surrounding Loch Etive, there is a huge range of activities in the area to suit all ages and interest. Achnacloich offers wild brown trout fishing on a chain of three hill lochs, ideal for beginners. No charge is made for the loch fishing or the use of the estate boats. Season: April to September inclusive. Salmon fishing on the famous River Awe is available for 2 rods from May to September. This must be booked in advance and is £100.00 per day for the 2 rods. The river is 7 miles from Achnacloich (15 minutes by car). During November to January Achnacloich offers an outstanding driven pheasant shoot in the foothills above Loch Etive, known for its high birds and fine oak and birch wood drives. Golfers can enjoy 3 courses within 10 miles; Oban, Taynuilt and Dalmally. All are open to visitors. We recommend the course in Oban. Those happy to travel further can reach the spectacular Dragon's Tooth course at Ballachulish (45 minutes north) and the famous Loch Lomond course is an hour distant. Hill walking is spectacular and there are 4 munros within 10 miles of Achnacloich, and Ben Nevis and Glencoe are less than an hour away. Ben Cruachan is the most accessible and presents a very rewarding 4-6 hour walk. Achnacloich Estate runs for several miles along the shore of Loch Etive, a beautiful sea loch. A boat and boathouse are provided giving wonderful opportunities for picnics, mackerel fishing and access to the historic Abbot's Isle. The loch is fully tidal and extends inland for a further 17 miles. Sailing and Boat Trips: Whale watching, bird watching and expeditions to the Corryvreckan whirlpool are accessed from Oban. Fishing can be arranged and boat hire is available on Loch Etive from www.tfcboats.com The beach at Tralee (5 miles) is unspoilt and good for children.

Connel is a village in Argyll and Bute close to Oban and is situated on the southern shore of Loch Etive It is known for the Connel Bridge an attractive cantilever bridge which spans Loch Etive and the Falls of Lora. Get your timing right when you visit the Falls of Lora and you will see just how stunning the waterfalls and whirlpools really are and you might even spot a seal! Connel has a number of shops, bars and restaurants including The Glue Pot, The Oyster Inn and The Falls, all serving the best local produce on offer in delightful surroundings. While you are here, you can stock up on essentials at any one of a number of convenience shops including Connel Village Store and Dunbeg Stores. Within easy reach of Connel is the popular town of Oban with its array of shops and boutiques. Take a tour around the Oban Distillery and just a short drive away is the Scottish Sealife Sanctuary which is well worth a visit.
