  • "Beautiful location, with amazing views from almost every window of the Old Farmhouse."

The cottage was warm and cosy - underfloor heating and the log fire helped with February temperatures! The owners were friendly and welcoming, with homemade goodies on arrival & lots of thoughtful touches added to each room. We enjoyed our stay immensely & would love to return.

Everything was there if needed. A lovely welcome pack of freshly baked bread & pancakes on arrival which smelt amazing when you first enter. Lots of other things like milk, biscuits fudge it was all a nice surprise. Both David & Freda & their son were very friendly & there if we needed anything. I would love to go back again one day & if you haven’t been I can honestly say you won’t be disappointed.

Thank you so much for leaving us such lovely feedback, Tracy especially since your short break holiday was cut even shorter by Storm Babet. However, I hope that your 2 days of travels with lovely weather made up for the early departure and that your Mum enjoyed being with you and your brother - such a lovely idea. Do please come back; we hardly had time to get to know you! Property Owner

It suits those who like to get away from it all. It is fun to be in the farm steading and to see the comings and goings of farm life. The house is beautiful inside and has everything you may need. The view is spectacular. Access to the loch is easy and we enjoyed swimming every day .The hosts are delightful and in credibly interesting and knowledgable. We had a very happy family holiday and would totally recommend the old farmhouse to those who love Scotland, it’s ever changing moods, and the joy of being away from the bustle of cars and crowds.

Thank you for taking the time to say such nice things about the Old Farmhouse. You were such an active family, with daily runs and wild swimming. And yes, apart from the Portnellan comings and goings, we are indeed off the beaten track and we love having people here who appreciate that. Property Owner

  • "The farmhouse is in a lovely position overlooking Loch Lomond."

The owners are so friendly and my wife's disabilities were catered for 100%. There is a facility for a speed boat ride on the Loch and a commentary on some of the most interesting spots. We cannot recommend this farmhouse highly enough. Our stay was made all the better by the interreaction with the owners who were always on hand should there be any problems. (We had none)

We are so glad that the Old Farmhouse met your requirements; mind you, it did occur to us that your wife's disability was no barrier to her full enjoyment of any activity she chose to join in with! For example, getting on a speedboat and enjoying a whiz around a very low Loch Lomond. As you will now know, we loved having our wee chats. And thank you for leaving the house so neat and tidy. Freda, David and Chris were the perfect hosts and we wanted for nothing. If you have the opportunity to stay at the cottage then take it - we couldn't recommend it enough. Beautiful views over loch Lomond every morning when you wake up and lovely sunny evenings, very still and calm to enjoy the sunset. If you also have the opportunity, take a loch cruise with Chris on his speedboat, it's a unique way to see the loch from a totally different viewpoint and Chris' local knowlege is faultless - he might even suggest some waterskiing too if it's your birthday ! Thanks once again for a most memorable week and best wishes to you all for a great summer season !

  • "This accommodation has amongst many, two absolutely stunning qualities, the view from the frontage straight up the length of Loch Lomond, which is surely one of the best amongst any rental property in Scotland!"

The panoramic view including Ben Lomond the most southerly Munro is awesome. Secondly the Scott-Park family who are on site are surely the most warm, welcoming, friendly hospitable hosts anyone could ever meet. Freda, David & son Chris are all equally a delight to meet & chat to & are clearly extremely proud of their acheivements on the organic farm & keen to take time to educate their guests who show interest. Don't leave without trying their delicious beef! The house is the original farmhouse which was completely renovated to a very high standard with lots of lovely oak. Three double rooms are superbly finished with stunning loch views from the bed giving a tremendously relaxing calm feel. There are walks to be had within their land straight from the door including a long length of Loch foreshore. There is a huge choice of where to visit within the area, the Wallace Monument being one of our favourites. We do not have the slightest reservation about not returning for another visit at some point & fondly look forward to meeting the family again, 5* Portnellan, fabulous!

David, Chris and Freda were very welcoming and supplied essentials as well as fresh baked bread, pancakes and home made jam which were delicious. The Old Farmhouse was very well equipped and furnished and Freda even ensured there were was a supply of toys for our 2 year old grandson which was an unexpected and lovely touch. The Old Farmhouse is ideally suited for touring Loch Lomond and surrounding area and nearby Drymen is worth a mention with its choice with a good quality eateries. We would recommend the Clachan Inn for the Sunday roast and the Winnock Hotel, and Drymen Inn for lunch. Hopefully we will pay a return visit.

  • "The first thing that strikes you on arrival at Portnellan is the fantastic view from The Old Farmhouse."

The ever-changing scenery encompassing Loch Lomond (only 200 yards away) with a backdrop of hills and mountains, including majestic Ben Lomond itself, is quite breath-taking. You can be assured of the warmest of welcomes on arrival together with a sumptuous and delicious ‘welcome pack’, including a loaf of David’s home-baked bread and pancakes, home-made jam, Scottish oatcakes and a wee dram of local whisky! The Old Farmhouse is extremely well-equipped and comfortable throughout; our super-king bed with crisp linen ensured a good night’s sleep, but we could hardly wait to be waking up to THAT view every morning! Portnellan is a working organic beef farm and so you may see cattle in the yard behind the farmhouse and David and Freda (often accompanied by their two friendly dogs) about the place. It is also worth pointing out that Portnellan is somewhat remote being a couple of miles from the nearest main road; a real plus for us as it is beautifully quiet and the night sky away from all light pollution is something to behold on a clear night. A farm walk with David gives you a fascinating insight into what Portnellan Farm means to them. Don’t forget to pack your ‘wellies’! One, if not THE, highlight of our week was a two hour speedboat trip with Chris. Such a memorable experience and Chris is a brilliant guide with a vast knowledge of the loch; the history, topography and wildlife as well as what each of the islands on the Loch has to offer. It is far more than just holiday accommodation; it offers a unique experience in an idyllic setting and we definitely intend to return in the very near future.

  • "We stayed at The Old Farmhouse on Portnellan Farm 21-28 September."

The Farmhouse has been reconverted in recent years to a very high standard and includes everything you will need for your stay. The view over Loch Lomond, which is only a few metres in front is unbelievable, in fact you could spend the whole week just admiring it! The owners Freda, David and their son Chris are lovely, friendly people and are so helpful in terms of local knowledge and what to do and see. The Old Farmhouse is an excellent base for visiting all the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs have to offer. Places like Stirling, Helensburgh and Glasgow are within easy reach. We thoroughly enjoyed a speedboat trip around the Loch with Chris, something not to be missed. We would highly recommend The Old Farmhouse.

  • "Having read some of the reviews of some previous guests, we can only agree that Portnellan Farm was one of the top holiday destinations we've visited."

The location was stunning, looking right across Loch Lomond, with so many different lights and skys during our week there. The location was also a good base for Loch Katrine and the Trossachs, Stirling Castle and Helesburg's Rennie Mackintosh Hill House. The cottage was of the highest standard with large double beds in each of the three large bedrooms. The kitchen was well fitted with electric range cooker, built in microwave and a American style fridge freezer. Everything was provided in the kitchen, again to the high standard elsewhere. And most of all Freda, David and their son Chris were warm friendly and welcoming from the start of what was a very memorable stay.

  • "Cannot praise this location highly enough."

The house had been beautifully prepared for us to a very high standard by the exceptional Freda, even fresh flowers in the bedrooms! This is the best equipped self catering accommodation we have ever stayed in and as we received a full list of what would be supplied in the house before we left home it helped enormously with the packing. The view from each room was amazing, the beds really comfortable and the Wifi far better than we had expected! We took up the offer of a farm tour with David which was well worth it and we learnt a lot, a really enjoyable afternoon. The speedboat tour is a must if you stay here, great fun and Chris is very knowledgeable about the area and the Loch. Tours are ultra flexible so after chatting to Chris you can make your own itinerary, we visited an island for a beautiful walk and then hopped to another island for a coffee in the pub there. It is a working farm and quite remote which all added to the attraction for us. Great property run by a lovely family who made us feel so welcome...something a bit special!

  • "At the end of June 2019 we were with five adults a week on holiday in 'The Old Farmhouse', Gartocharn, Loch Lomond."

It was a fantastic holiday. The house is very quietly located, and has a fully equipped kitchen-dining area, it has three spacious bedrooms and two bathrooms. On our arrival we were welcomed by Chris, the son of the house. David, Chris and Freda (our hosts, and hostess), are incredibly sweet and friendly people. The terrace at the front of the house, is wonderful to enjoy a sunset. The cottage is a good base for a city visit to Glasgow or Stirling. There is also no lack of hiking opportunities: Ben Lomond, The Whangie, Conic Hill, Primrose Hill (Loch katrine), Aberfoyle (queen elizabeth forest park)..... A trip on the speedboat of Chris is an absolute must. We even used his services twice. Once to take us to Rowardennan for the start of a hike. And a second time to observe a beautiful sunset from the lake. Chris is an excellent boater, and has an enormous knowledge of the history, culture and the fauna and flora of Loch Lomond and the islands. In this house, you can really enjoy and relax. This holiday cottage is highly recommended. We certainly want to visit it a second time , because there is so much more to discover in this region of Scotland. Thank you David, Chris and Freda, for your hospitality. • "We had a really super time at the farm and would recommend it for it's quality and position."

It was more like borrowing the keys to a friends house, than a renting a holiday home. Everything was well thought through, Freda, David and Chris always had time to sort out any little problems or for a chat about the area and especially what they were doing on the farm, which was really interesting. The position by the Loch made the most of the views, and there was always something to see. Whether it was the wildlife, boats out fishing or the changing colours of the sky and hills.

The house is comfortable, warm and fully equipped with a lot of extras. The view over Loch Lomond and the mountains is wonderful from outside as well from every room in the house and in every kind of weather. Sitting on the front deck we enjoyed the beautiful sunset. The owners are very kind and welcoming, and gave us a lot of information about Scotland, places to go, hill walking, the loch and so much more. The tasteful beef on the barbecue, our trip on the loch with the speedboat and the musical goodbye made it so we?ll never forget our stay in The Old Farmhouse.

  • "We have just arrived home after a truly fabulous week in the Old Farmhouse."

The pictures can't prepare you for the amazing view as you drive up to the house and the peace and tranquility there was amazing. The fact that it is a working farm added to our experience and that Freda, David and Chris were always on hand to talk about the farm and their projects, take us up to spot ospreys (David carrying our daughter on his shoulders as he went!) and give us tips and info about the area etc. They were so friendly and made the week all the more special. The house was really comfortable, nicely furnished and decorated with extra special attention to detail. Lots of little extras that you wouldn't normally expect from a holiday home. Sitting on the decking in the evenings and indeed at any time of day wass just lovely and we spent a lot of time down on the pier looking our over the loch. We also took a swim - which none of us were expecting, and did some Stand Up Paddle Boarding that we hired from Chris. Just a great week and we're already missing the house, loch and family! Thank you!

A glorious location with spectacular views that we just couldn't believe were real, they're the kind of views you usually only see in brochures! The cottage has been finished to an 11/10 standard, yes, that good, and is very comfortable. The weather was a little mixed for us but it really didn't matter, knowing there's such a glorious cottage to retreat to definitely lifted the spirits! Have stayed in one of their properties before and found it to be excellent. Went to Fairfield in Inveraray, which was a nice property, but unfortunately suffered from a hot water/heating failure. • "We have been self-catering in Scotland for over 25 years and can honestly say that The Old Farmhouse is one of the most immaculately presented houses we have ever stayed in."

There were so many personal touches and little extras that immediately made us feel welcome. Definitely not just a holiday house but a very comfortable home to enjoy and completely relax in. It is a superb location with quick and easy access to the surrounding very scenic area which offers a wealth of interests and activities for all ages. As 'baby boomers' we found lots of places where we could have a gentle stroll and particularly enjoyed the nearby RSPB Loch Lomond Reserve. Balloch Castle Country Park, Luss, Flanders Moss Nature Reserve near Kippen, The Hill House, Helensburgh, to name but a few, are all worth a visit. But most of all we just enjoyed spending time on the verandah taking in the stunning view over Loch Lomond with its ever changing moods, the bird life and the peace and quiet that a stay at Portnellan Farm offers. We had superb hosts in David, Freda and Chris. They are all so warm and friendly and would do anything at all within their powers to make your holiday a happy and memorable one. We can thoroughly recommend The Old Farmhouse for young and old alike. It's a truly special place!

. The cottage is warm and cosy, the kitchen, perfectly equipped and we also loved the charming open fireplace in the livingroom. The rooms upstairs were very spacious and comfortable. The house has all it needs to be able to have a wonderful time. We've really enjoyed sitting outside, having BBQ. What also makes it very special is the organic beef, which is most delicious. We tried it out in several kinds. Last, but not least we have to mention the most sympathetic family, who is very supportive and warmhearted. The best thing was the tour around the farm guided by David! We do highly recommend this cottage as an allround perfect experience.

  • "For over 20 years we've had at least two holidays each year with our two children (now aged 20 and 21) in the UK and abroad and have always preferred to go self catering, staying in a variety of apartments, cottages, houses and villas."

We spend a considerable amount of time researching properties, looking at websites and reading reviews as we are quite particular and place great emphasis on finding somewhere very special to rent for the duration of our holiday. We have, therefore, stayed in some beautiful holiday homes over the years. However, we all agree (yes the kids too!) that The Old Farm House has to be "the icing on the cake" - it really is the most amazing property we've ever stayed in: the house was so beautifully presented, so immaculately clean and better equipped than we could ever have imagined. The website has some superb photos of the house and its interior so there's no need to go on too much about the individual rooms other than EVERY room is fab - the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms etc. The lovely owners, Freda and David Scott-Parks, have really thought of everything when designing the house and have so obviously gone out of their way to make their guests visit as perfect as can be. So many lovely touches were provided: freshly baked pancakes with butter and home-made jam on arrival, fresh flowers in each bedroom (colours coordinating with the blinds and throws on the beds), beautiful quality bed linen and towels - the list is endless! We had a very busy week sightseeing but what made our week special and so memorable was the very lovely Scott-Parks and their stunning house with its amazing views over Loch Lomond - thank you both SO much for looking after us so well - we certainly hope to return one day!

  • "First class accommodation."

... Immaculately clean and stylishly presented, very well equipped kitchen. comfortable beds, beautiful views and lots of extra touches from fresh flowers to homemade pancakes on arrival... We stayed here with our two 'under twos' and the farm animals and kids boat play area were a big hit... Wonderful hospitality from our hosts David, Freda and Chris - we'll be back!

  • "What a fabulous holiday we had at Portnellan Farm, David, Freda & Chris were so helpful, welcoming and friendly."

The views over Loch Lomond were to die for, the accommodation tastefully decorated and lovely and warm and cosy. Chris took us out on his speedboat and this was definitely one of the highlights of our holiday, what better than pulling up to a restaurant for a drink in your own speedboat! We also sampled some of the tasty organic beef for several of our meals and even bought some more to take home with us. My son also loved the jacuzzi bath, exploring the water front every day, going to visit the cows and playing with Skye (the farm dog). There is loads to do in the surrounding area between the Glengoyne distillery, Tree zone at Loch Lomond shores, golf, pony trekking and lots of activities on the Loch. It was great speaking to David, Freda & Chris and finding out all about the farm and the surrounding areas - they are all so knowledgeable and friendly and even provided some homemade pancakes and warm bread! A real find! You will not be disappointed.

  • "We spent one week of our holiday at The old Farmhouse in June 2017."

We have stayed in a number of holiday cottages in Scotland during the last 10 years but this is one of the most comfortable and well equipped (including rubbish bags- only for insider!) places we have ever stayed in. The house is clearly lovingly looked after by its owners. Everything was perfect and our hosts David, Freda and Chris were so friendly and warm-hearted, that we felt 'at home' from the first minute of our stay. There were some delicious pancakes and self-made jam awaiting us on arrival and Freda gave us a warm welcome with her fresh self-made bread. We liked sitting on the front-deck and enjoying the magnificent views over Loch Lomond, talking to David about the farm and cruising with Chris on his speedboat. If you're looking for peace and quiet in both beautiful surroundings and accommodation we would definitely recommend The Old Farmhouse. We have stayed in many beautiful properties in Scotland but this is undoubtedly one of the best. We very much hope to return and perhaps there still will be cow, which was a new-born calf in June 2017, calling Stephanie. Georg, Elke,Stephanie, Heinz-Josef and Granny Maria from Germany

  • "Oh wow wow wow!"

What an amazing place in an amazing location. The house was spotless and one of the most comfortable and cosy holiday cottages we've ever stayed in. Breathtaking views. Would recommend and would love to stay again

  • "Absolutely stunning place!"

The Old Farmhouse is a beautiful home with all the mod-cons. Superb view over the loch and Freda, David & Chris are the most welcoming and friendly people. From the freshly made bread and pancakes, the gorgeous homemade jam and the surprise visit by David, it really was the most wonderful holiday and we cannot wait to return. The speedboat trip run by Chris is a must, it is the only way to see the true loch (you cannot believe how vast it is and all the small islands and their inhabitants). Thank you for making it so special.

  • "This is difficult."

.. How can I comment on a vacation house that has been commented before as 'close to perfection' and tell website visitor other things than 'close to perfection' in nearly everything... Perhaps by commenting about the lesser than ideal stuff. Well, there is the fact that hiring for one week seemed a mistake. It was our first visit and we feel like having to come back because we had the feeling one week was way too short. There is the fact that some of our visits could have been better - we thought Stirling Castle was quite expensive for a family; we didn't enjoy Luss that much because it was overcrowded. You see: all negative aspects have nothing whatever to do with The Old Farmhouse (perfect), the family Scott-Park (perfect), the cows (perfect)... and so on and on and on... Are you a family / a company of 4 - 6 and are you looking for a holiday home in Scotland: don't hesitate and book as soon as possible for next year's holiday.

  • "We (a family of four from Germany) have just spent a most wonderful week at The Old Farmhouse."

It was the best holiday location we've ever been to, with really extraordinary views from every room in this beautiful house (with very good beds, too). Freda, David and Chris made us feel super welcome, with great treats, information, chats, and an unforgettable boat trip (with a good lunch at a nice pub on an island nearby). The kids also particularly enjoyed kayaking and playing with the dogs and we all enjoyed a relaxing holiday with trips to some interesing sights nearby. Thank you for a great holiday!

  • "What a fantastic week we had at this lovely farmhouse."

Very spacious with three large bedrooms, and downstairs has a nice wet room too. The family are extremely friendly and could not do enough for us. We took the kids up to see the cows before they were let out, thanks to David. The speed boat ride was brilliant, with their son Chris taking us out on a very informative tour of the islands. Very friendly and a good laugh too. The views from the front windows over the Loch are to die for, especially in the evenings when you have a red sun set. I would most certainly return here without doubt and would recommend this farm to anyone. Thanks again Freda, David and Chris for making us so welcome. Keith.

  • "Fabulous week spent at The Old Farmhouse last week."

Glorious sunny weather all week (end of May/beginning of June) whilst the south-east of England (where we live) froze. The house is beautifully done out and equipped with everything you could possibly want. Wonderful location right on the shore of Loch Lomond with a different sunset every evening. A perfect base for exploring far and wide and lovely and peaceful to return to at the end of a busy day. The Scott-Parks are just delightful and we are already thinking about when we could make a return visit! Highly recommended.
