“The garden was great; the children loved the freedom and space to play, and the views were beautiful.”

The open fire in the lounge was lovely and the access to logs was appreciated. However... the house smelt musty the moment we walked in which was hugely off putting and gave the sense of an unloved, dirty, dated property. The showers had little pressure, so we all used the one shower that was the best of a bad bunch. The open fire in the lounge was lovely and the access to logs was appreciated. However... the house smelt musty the moment we walked in which was hugely off putting and gave the sense of an unloved, dirty, dated property. The showers had little pressure, so we all used the one shower that was the best of a bad bunch. The rugs, although very valuable and old, I'm sure, were so thin and poorly secured that they constantly ruffled up so looked awful and were a trip hazard throughout our stay. The ovens didn't heat up very well, perhaps the seal was broken. There was no microwave which for the amount we spent would have expected as standard in the property. In the master suite there wasn't even a headboard, from a quality/standard point of view for the money we spent would be expected. The bed in the other front facing room was very very uncomfortable - it was 2 single beds made up as a king but it sagged heavily in the middle. All in all it seemed that they have relied on the location alone to justify the price of the rental. We have stayed in loads of holiday properties in some stunning locations in Scotland, so we know what to expect. This one fell vastly short and we wouldn't stay again or recommend it to others unless we're told it has been properly renovated. The house is so spacious and beautiful, but it needs bringing up to date. I look forward to hearing from you. Anna Chapman

Many thanks for the comments you have given us from your stay at Ardchattan Manse. We so appreciate them. The garden and the freedom and the space for your children to play is there to be enjoyed and we are glad you also appreciated the open fires and the availability of logs. The rest of your comments however we can do something about and having read them will work to see if we can improve on the points you discussed. I am most concerned however about the beds. All the beds in the house have the same specifications and came from the same top of the range supplier 2 years ago and if you felt they were uncomfortable we will get back to the supplier. I am also very concerned about your comments on our four ovens. We had three new ovens put in under two years ago and again I will double check with the supplier. Thank you again for your very valuable feedback. Property Owner

The property

Ardchattan Manse, has an iconic position surrounded by the waters of Loch Etive on three sides and a protected wooded hill to the back of the property. The house dates back to 1772-3 and was originally lived in by the Minister worshipping at the now derelict local parish church, just over the garden wall. Today it is a family house sitting in its own secluded grounds of around three acres. The house is traditionally furnished, is comfortable and relaxing. Emphasis is placed on the peace and calm of this beautiful house in its unique setting with the front of the house providing stunning views of the water and local wildlife. Extensive lawn and outside terrace provide good opportunities for outside eating and socialising. Children can roam the grounds and enjoy the fun of three private beaches, climbing ropes and swing seats. There is a miniscule wendy house to find in the wood area of the garden. Children (and adults!) have a chance to see the resident family of otters who are frequent but shy visitors to the shore, as are the non-shy towering Sea Eagles, often seen above the property The gardens provide a tranquil setting and include the outline of a traditional old walled Scottish garden. This area of Scotland is noted for its outstanding ‘gulf stream gardens’ and Ardchattan Manse provides an excellent base for garden visiting. Oban has a range of shops selling interesting local products and has some excellent fish restaurants. It is also the hub for all the ferries visiting the Inner and Outer Hebrides including Iona with its long history of religious and artistic influences, these provide wonderful day trips. There are local cycling routes and walking, allowing visitors to enjoy this beautiful area of Argyll.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £300.
