“An extremely comfortable cottage, beautifully decorated and with all the facilities we needed.”

The underfloor heating worked a treat, the kitchen was kitted out so well for a big group and the living room space spot on. The garden space was great for ball games and the surrounding walks and Loch access were fantastic. We were on a three generations holiday so some feedback that could improve things. The door handles were v stiff and meant one of our party got trapped a couple of times. The teens thought the wifi was too slow and suggested a booster could improve that. All of us found the ...

All of us found the filter taste in the tap water meant it was undrinkable. We know it can be difficult to adjust filters with all the necessary regulations. We ended up sourcing drinking water from the harbour outdoor tap at Tarbert most days.

The property

On the shores of West Loch Tarbert, Achaglachgach Stables is a beautifully designed, ecologically sensitive, conversion of a grand stone stables and barn, with an extraordinary 50ft long, high-ceilinged room for living and entertaining. Huge windows and sliding doors show wonderful views across the loch and into the beech wood and gardens beyond. In addition, Achaglachgach is an eco-home, warm all year round thanks to geothermal underfloor heating on slate and wood floors; solar panels and double glazing. In the evenings, there is a wood-burning stove for added appeal. If you love this house, but it is not quite large enough, you can add Achaglachgach Cottage, which is close by, and sleeps 4. See the link at the bottom of this text. Ideal for families, reunions or five couples, the house sleeps ten in two king-size (one en suite), and three twin bedrooms. The well-equipped kitchen seats ten and glass doors can create an indoor-outdoor eating space, with a picnic table and benches in the garden. For children, there is a cosy television corner with games and DVDs, and also a fenced-in garden. Beyond, the burn is perfect for playing, as is the pebble beach across the field, and the beech wood is a popular place for building dens. The building was created originally by the famous Scot's Baronial architects Peddie and Kinnear in the 1860s, and they made the stable doors tall enough for riders to walk through without dismounting. The house is part of the Achaglachgach Estate, and guests can also walk in the oak woods and the original walled garden. A sandy beach is less than ten minutes drive, and further along the Kilberry Road there are coves, beaches and views over Gigha, Islay and Jura. The famous, Michelin recommended, Kilberry Inn restaurant is nearby, and Tarbert village ten minutes away has restaurants, pubs, a supermarket and fresh seafood. Achaglachgach Cottage. EPC Rating: Band C

About the location

TARBERT

Lochgilphead 14 miles.

Built around an inlet on Loch Fyne, Tarbert has long been both a harbour and a key strategic point in the history of Scotland's rugged West Coast. Tarbert once required three castles to protect it, and the ruins of one of these can still be visited today. Built around the natural harbour, fishing and sailing continue to play an important part in the life of the village. There are many annual events to interest all tastes including the sailing regatta on Loch Fyne, seafood and music festivals. The 87 mile Kintyre Way stretches from Tarbert to the south of the Kintyre Peninsula, and offers walking for all levels and with ferry connections to Islay and Arran, there is simply no better location to relax and explore this rugged and picturesque part of Scotland.

Note: Though electricity is included in the rent, charging for electric cars is not included in the rental.
Note: This property will not allow more than two well-behaved dogs.
