RAF Leuchers Airshow 2013
Autumn events in Fife don’t come more spectacular than the Royal Air Force’s (RAF) Leuchars Airshow. On September 7th the skies above the RAF base in Leuchars, Fife will be transformed into a spectacular display of aviator acrobatics during the 65th annual ‘Battle of Britain at Home Day’ Airshow. Described by organisers as an opportunity to showcase the RAF at its best, the high-octane Airshow is garneted to keep the whole family entertained with its mix of exhilarating air displays and ground-based entertainment.
As the second largest non-sporting event in the county, last year the event attracted crowds of 400,000 people! The highlight of last year’s show, the Red Arrows, are returning to amaze and entertain the crowds. Now in their 33rd year of preforming, the Red Arrows and their trademark planes are returning to show audiences why their heart-stopping acrobatic feats have turned them into a worldwide sensation!
Joining them in the sky are the RAF Falcons, the UK’s premier parachute display team. Watch out for their trademark eleven person non-contact canopy stack display routine! You can also get a glimpse into the life of one royal at the RAF Lossiemouth’s Sea King display; the plane made famous by its royal pilot Prince William. Unfortunately, a glimpse of the prince may not be included in the display!
Other highlights include the Battle of Britain memorial flight display which showcases classic World War 2 fighter planes including the famous Spitfire; and the RV8tors high-speed acrobatic team whose planes can reach speeds of 450 mph during their routine!
Back on the ground, budding pilots can meet members of the RAF and explore their planes in the exhibition hanger. If you think you could be the next Maverick or Iceman, look out for the flight simulators which allow you to experience the thrill of flying!
If you need a recharge after the excitement, rewind time and take a stroll around the vintage military village to discover what life was like in the army during the past 100 years. The vintage dance company Fly Right, will also be there to put your dance skills to the test.
The event will also contain a funfair for little and big kids of all ages, the RAF Leuchars military wives choir, bagpipe displays and much more. Film fans should look out for the UK Garrison, an international Star Wars costume group that will be at the event to raise money for children’s charities. Since forming they have raised an impressive £1 million for charity!
There will also be a vintage car and supercar display for those who prefer automobiles to aviation! The display will include a Jaguar SS100 and XK120 as well as an Aston Martin DB9.
Don’t put off seeing the spectacle until next year. Due to the RAF’s upcoming departure from Leuchars, this may be the last time the RAF daredevils get to perform at the airbase! Tickets to the event cost £25 for adults and £12 for children, family and group packages are also available. For more information see the RAF Leuchars Airshow’s website.
