22 November 2016

Family holidays are fantastic but as every parent knows, finding activities to keep children entertained on holiday can be challenging.  If you need a family holiday destination that will keep kids and adults happy then look no further than Edinburgh! Scotland’s vibrant capital has a fantastic range of activities for children. In this diverse city you’ll find everything from a magical castle, to a wild zoo. If you’re looking for holiday activities for kids in Edinburgh, read our guide to the top family attractions:

Edinburgh Castle

Disney isn’t the only family destination with a castle! Discover the real deal at Edinburgh Castle. Situated on a rocky perch above the city, the majestic castle is an unmissable attraction; a trip to Edinburgh wouldn’t be complete without visiting the historic stronghold!

Adventurous kids will love finding out about the castle’s bloody battles and noble knights, while glamorous kids (and mums) can skip the gore and go straight to the selection of Crown Jewels that are housed in the castle. The castle runs events throughout the year that make history come to life so make sure to visit the castle’s website before you go so you don’t miss out!

The Witchery Tours

Let Edinburgh’s resident ghoul, Adam Lyal be your guide to Edinburgh’s spooky Old Town! Once the sun sets, Adam and his spooky friends bring the city to life! This award-winning walking tour takes a light-hearted look at Edinburgh’s dark past as you travel around the Old Town’s closes and alleyways. On route, watch out for the ghouls and ghosts who’re lurking in the shadows! Children of all ages are welcome on the tour but as it takes place at night and there are spooky surprises along the way, it’s not recommended for very young children or adults who frighten easily! The tour runs from May to September and it’s ideal for discovering more about Edinburgh’s dramatic and gory past; visit the website to book your place.

Our Dynamic Earth

Journey back in time, brave tropical storms, face thunderous earthquakes and brave icy North Pole winds all in a day at Our Dynamic Earth! Situated at the Salisbury Crags, this science centre is the perfect holiday activity for kids with curious minds. As you travel around the interactive 4D exhibits you’ll be taken on a journey from the dawn of time to the distant future, traveling through wild tundra, volatile volcanos and deep oceans on route. Children will love interacting with the immense exhibits so much that they won’t even realise that they’re learning as they do so.

Edinburgh Zoo

Towards the outskirts of Edinburgh is the largest wildlife attraction in Scotland, Edinburgh Zoo! On a day out at the zoo, your little monkeys will get to see over 1,000 rare and endangered animals that live in the 82 acres of parkland. As well as being able to get up close to the UK’s only cuddly Koalas, you can also see the Zoo’s main attractions, Tian Tian and Yang Guang the giant pandas! Don’t miss the penguin parade either, a firm favourite amongst visitors to the zoo. The Zoo runs regular events throughout the year ranging from educational talks to chimpanzee displays! Visit the website to find out more.
