Tigh Bhisa (pronounced ‘Tie-Veesa’ and meaning the House of ‘Bisa’ Macdonald, the nickname of the Macdonald family who have been tenants for over 250 years on this one croft) is a high-quality renovated blackhouse on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, providing 4-star luxury accommodation for two people.
The owners have put a great deal of thought into ensuring you feel at home in this gorgeous property: as well as a kitchen equipped for a creative cook, indoor clogs and hand-made soaps are also provided.
Set down a side road in a quiet village, the cottage, with its six-foot-thick stone walls, solid fuel stove and underfloor heating, makes a cosy hideaway in winter, when there’s a chance of seeing the spectacular northern lights. In the endless daylight hours of summer, there are superb sandy beaches, wildflower meadows, open moorlands, and rugged cliffs to explore, as well as opportunities to spot the vast variety of bird and animal life.
The Outer Hebrides are a string of islands off the north-west coast of Scotland, and are unsurpassed in their beauty and diversity of natural landscapes and species: few places match their abundance of peaceful, unspoilt habitats. Fewer still have such a rich cultural tradition and human history: the Neolithic settlers of over 6000 years ago being the first communities, as evidenced by the fascinating and well-preserved archaeology – the truly remarkable standing stones of Callanish are older than Stonehenge and pre-date the Egyptian pyramids by a thousand years!
The islands can be reached by flights from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen or Inverness; or by ferry from Uig on Skye to Tarbert, or Ullapool to Stornoway.
Whether your ideal holiday is full of adventure and sport, or perhaps less challenging pursuits, Tigh Bhisa provides the perfect base, and will be a joy to return to after a day’s activities.
