Carse House was refurbished in 2008, and offers a great family holiday home in a stunning location just a few miles from the small fishing village of Tarbert on the Kintyre peninsula in south-west Argyll, in an area of tremendous natural beauty and tranquillity, which offers plentiful opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, whether walking, cycling, riding or kayaking!
There are fine sandy beaches and rock-pooling shores all along this coast on which to spend the long summer days, and the views over to the Mull of Kintyre are memorable. Locally, a 9-hole golf course, riding stables, famous gardens to visit and several good restaurants specialising in seafood can be enjoyed.
From West Loch Tarbert, ferry trips relay to the Inner Hebridean islands of Islay, Jura and Gigha. From Cloanaig and Campbeltown further south, you can sail to the island of Arran.
Oban, with all its attractions and ferry services to Mull and Iona, is just over an hour's drive away. In the opposite direction, Inveraray Castle can be found at about the same distance up the west side of Loch Fyne.
Carse House is an outstanding example of new meeting old: the recent renovations have retained its original features, such as a large stained-glass window, sweeping staircase and beautiful period wallpaper, whilst upgrading to a very high standard to offer all the comforts of modern-day living.
The large open-plan kitchen/diner is ideal for socialising and more informal dining, whilst the grand dining room on the first floor is perfect for those special dinners. The large drawing room has views across the water and to the isle of Islay beyond.
The house is very spacious, encompassing four floors, giving maximum space for all age ranges. There are mature grounds which are perfect for outdoor relaxation and for children to explore the woodland hideaways. Carse Estate also has a large sandy beach just a short walk away.
As with most west coast houses, the water, although good to drink, is peaty in colour. Those with babies/elderly guests may prefer to bring bottled water.
