Rarely does a house with such character and beautiful lochside village setting as Charleston House become available for self-catering holidays. This fabulous 18th-century house has many original features, including sloping floors and open beams. In the 'nook', the wood burning stove, wooden tables, flooring and beams make this an atmospheric room to enjoy a 'wee dram' in the evening.
Having once been run as the award-winning 'Creel Restaurant', the kitchen is exceptionally well equipped, yet is homely enough not to be daunting: for the budding chef, it is a dream to work in and, to top it off, local fisherman will deliver freshly caught lobsters, prawns and fish to your door!
For those who enjoy the great outdoors, the house has an enviable waterside location, and from the door you can enjoy country and coastal walks along Gairloch's beautiful sandy beach. The harbour, golf courses and pony trekking are all just a short walk away. You will find opportunities for beachcombing, surfing, cycling, loch and sea fishing and, of course, the wonderful west coast mountains to climb. You can launch a kayak or boat from the slipway adjacent to the house, and pontoon facilities are close by.
For those seeking a more sedate pace of life, there are restaurants, cafés, craft shops, art gallery, the beautiful Inverewe Garden, and plenty of picnic places by the sea.
The location is ideal - roads from Inverness are good for easy access, yet the position opens up a whole area of the west coast to explore, from the dramatic Torridonian Mountains and the alpine-scale Bealach na Ba, to the vibrant west coast port of Ullapool - all are within easy driving of Gairloch. We certainly recommend spending more than a week in this area, one of Scotland's finest holiday localities.
