Calgary Castle was built in 1817 by Captain Alan MacAskill who retired here. He built the gothic, gentrified and castellated front part, but he added it onto the rear quarter, which was an 18th-century Laird’s house. Captain MacAskill is buried, along with his lady friend, in the Mausoleum in the wooded garden.
This beautifully impressive castle, with its stunning views west across the bay and out to sea, must offer one of the most dramatic and romantic settings for a special holiday. Calgary (Gaelic for "meadow beside the bay") beach is famous for its sparkling white quartz sand and safe bathing waters.
In 1876, Colonel James Macleod of the Mounties visited the castle and was so entranced by the area that, when he returned to Canada, he changed the name of Fort Macleod to Calgary.
The castle was formerly owned by keen gardeners who planted over 150 species of rhododendron and a number of exotic plants, including a Chilean Beech tree which grows to the side of the castle. In spring, the woodland is carpeted in primroses, bluebells and wild garlic: this castle, a gem at any time, is a must in May and June! There is a resident housekeeper who lives in a basement apartment.

Garden
The gardens around the castle are being brought back from many years of neglect. Beautiful species rhododendrons and azaleas have so far been found, plus other rare trees, such as the amazing Chilean Beech next to the castle. The woodland is carpeted in spring with wild garlic, bluebells and primroses.

Of Historic or Architectural Interest
James Macleod of the Mounties visited the castle in 1876 and loved the area so much that, on his return to Canada, he renamed Fort Macleod, Calgary.
