More information about The Old Farmhouse

Property information

The Old Farmhouse occupies a magnificent location on the southern shore of Loch Lomond, one of Scotland’s most iconic freshwater lochs. The house offers an oasis of luxury and peace on a secluded private farm. The house has been extensively renovated in November 2014 and offers luxury accommodation for those who seek the finest in self-catering.

Almost all the rooms command the same mesmerising views of the loch and mountains, and the front decked area enjoys an uninterrupted panorama of the largest loch in Britain and Scotland’s most southerly Munro, Ben Lomond. Just below the house is a pier and moorings for those who wish to bring their own boat.

For others who would like to experience the stunning scenery of Loch Lomond and its islands from the water, the owner’s son, Chris, offers speedboat tours that will inform and thrill. You could take a picnic to the islands or visit, by boat, one of the many loch-side pubs and restaurants. There is much to learn from your guide about the history and ecology of the loch and its islands.

Glasgow, known for its architecture and entertainment, is less than an hour’s drive away or leave the car behind and take the frequent train service to the city centre for a day’s shopping, theatre, live music or visit the many superb museums.

What a fabulous holiday we had at Portnellan Farm, David, Freda & Chris were so helpful, welcoming and friendly. The views over Loch Lomond were to die for, the accommodation tastefully decorated and lovely and warm and cosy. Chris took us out on his speedboat and this was definitely one of the highlights of our holiday, what better than pulling up to a restaurant for a drink in your own speedboat! We also sampled some of the tasty organic beef for several of our meals and even bought some more to take home with us. My son also loved the jacuzzi bath, exploring the water front every day, going to visit the cows and playing with Skye (the farm dog). There is loads to do in the surrounding area between the Glengoyne distillery, Tree zone at Loch Lomond shores, golf, pony trekking and lots of activities on the Loch. It was great speaking to David, Freda & Chris and finding out all about the farm and the surrounding areas - they are all so knowledgeable and friendly and even provided some homemade pancakes and warm bread! A real find! You will not be disappointed.

First class accommodation.... Immaculately clean and stylishly presented, very well equipped kitchen. comfortable beds, beautiful views and lots of extra touches from fresh flowers to homemade pancakes on arrival... We stayed here with our two 'under twos' and the farm animals and kids boat play area were a big hit... Wonderful hospitality from our hosts David, Freda and Chris - we'll be back!

For over 20 years we've had at least two holidays each year with our two children (now aged 20 and 21) in the UK and abroad and have always preferred to go self catering, staying in a variety of apartments, cottages, houses and villas. We spend a considerable amount of time researching properties, looking at websites and reading reviews as we are quite particular and place great emphasis on finding somewhere very special to rent for the duration of our holiday. We have, therefore, stayed in some beautiful holiday homes over the years. However, we all agree (yes the kids too!) that The Old Farm House has to be "the icing on the cake" - it really is the most amazing property we've ever stayed in: the house was so beautifully presented, so immaculately clean and better equipped than we could ever have imagined. The website has some superb photos of the house and its interior so there's no need to go on too much about the individual rooms other than EVERY room is fab - the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms etc. The lovely owners, Freda and David Scott-Parks, have really thought of everything when designing the house and have so obviously gone out of their way to make their guests visit as perfect as can be. So many lovely touches were provided: freshly baked pancakes with butter and home-made jam on arrival, fresh flowers in each bedroom (colours coordinating with the blinds and throws on the beds), beautiful quality bed linen and towels - the list is endless! We had a very busy week sightseeing but what made our week special and so memorable was the very lovely Scott-Parks and their stunning house with its amazing views over Loch Lomond - thank you both SO much for looking after us so well - we certainly hope to return one day!

Fabulous week spent at The Old Farmhouse last week. Glorious sunny weather all week (end of May/beginning of June) whilst the south-east of England (where we live) froze. The house is beautifully done out and equipped with everything you could possibly want. Wonderful location right on the shore of Loch Lomond with a different sunset every evening. A perfect base for exploring far and wide and lovely and peaceful to return to at the end of a busy day. The Scott-Parks are just delightful and we are already thinking about when we could make a return visit! Highly recommended.

We had a wonderful holiday at Portnellan, The Old Farmhouse was of a high standard and fully equipped - there was literally everything you could think of . The owners - Freda, David and Chris were excellent and couldn't have done more to make our stay pleasurable - they were exceptional . The main thing besides the house and the welcome was the view - simply stunning ! So all in all a fab holiday - wish I was back there now - I have already recommended Portnellan to my friends and colleagues ( if you haven't been I can strongly recommend it ) . Look forward to receiving a LHH new brochure when it's out

We've just returned from a magical week in the Old Farmhouse and couldn't recommend it more. A glorious location with spectacular views that we just couldn't believe were real, they're the kind of views you usually only see in brochures! The cottage has been finished to an 11/10 standard, yes, that good, and is very comfortable. The weather was a little mixed for us but it really didn't matter, knowing there's such a glorious cottage to retreat to definitely lifted the spirits! The farm the cottage is located on is managed by the fabulous Scott-Parker family who were incredibly welcoming and helpful in every way imaginable, we can't thank them for the hospitality enough. All in all it was a truly wonderful week and would love to revisit the farm and cottage.

This is truly one of the most beautiful places I've stayed. The scenery will break your heart and Freda, David, Ginny and Chris are absolutely wonderful people. If you're lucky you might hear David playing the bagpipes in between farm chores!
  • Tori and Mark
The owners of the farm are amazing and will bend over backwards to ensure you have a great time at the farmhouse - we even got taken Osprey watching! The house is beautifully laid out with everything you could need for a stay. The setting is truly magical and the feel of being on a working farm is great as it's very down to earth but in a luxury house - just perfect. We will be returning!
  • Chris and janet
We had a really super time at the farm and would recommend it for it’s quality and position. It was more like borrowing the keys to a friends house, than a renting a holiday home. Everything was well thought through, Freda, David and Chris always had time to sort out any little problems or for a chat about the area and especially what they were doing on the farm, which was really interesting. The position by the Loch made the most of the views, and there was always something to see. Whether it was the wildlife, boats out fishing or the changing colours of the sky and hills.

We have just arrived home after a truly fabulous week in the Old Farmhouse. The pictures can't prepare you for the amazing view as you drive up to the house and the peace and tranquility there was amazing. The fact that it is a working farm added to our experience and that Freda, David and Chris were always on hand to talk about the farm and their projects, take us up to spot ospreys (David carrying our daughter on his shoulders as he went!) and give us tips and info about the area etc. They were so friendly and made the week all the more special. The house was really comfortable, nicely furnished and decorated with extra special attention to detail. Lots of little extras that you wouldn't normally expect from a holiday home. Sitting on the decking in the evenings and indeed at any time of day wass just lovely and we spent a lot of time down on the pier looking our over the loch. We also took a swim - which none of us were expecting, and did some Stand Up Paddle Boarding that we hired from Chris. Just a great week and we're already missing the house, loch and family! Thank you!

A wonderful place to be for a holiday in Scotland. The house is comfortable, warm and fully equipped with a lot of extras. The view over Loch Lomond and the mountains is wonderful from outside as well from every room in the house and in every kind of weather. Sitting on the front deck we enjoyed the beautiful sunset. The owners are very kind and welcoming, and gave us a lot of information about Scotland, places to go, hill walking, the loch and so much more. The tasteful beef on the barbecue, our trip on the loch with the speedboat and the musical goodbye made it so we’ll never forget our stay in The Old Farmhouse.

We had the most brilliant time! The house was amazing! So comfortable and so well equipped and that view!! Jonathan and I have traveled a lot and that view is up there in our top three best in the world!! David, Freda and Chris are amazing! So so lovely, kind and welcoming. They are the perfect hosts!! Their organic beef is fantastic! The weather was shocking and glorious! Our boat trip to the pub was brilliant and we loved every minute and are definitely going back!! Thank you again for your help and If all your clients are like the Scott-Park’s you must have best job in the world!! We look forward to booking the Old Farmhouse again, Kind regards Noreen Busher

We enjoyed our stay at this beautifully renovated cottage with it's spectacular view (at all weather), on the loch and the hills nearby.. The cottage is warm and cosy, the kitchen, perfectly equipped and we also loved the charming open fireplace in the livingroom. The rooms upstairs were very spacious and comfortable. The house has all it needs to be able to have a wonderful time. We've really enjoyed sitting outside, having BBQ. What also makes it very special is the organic beef, which is most delicious. We tried it out in several kinds. Last, but not least we have to mention the most sympathetic family, who is very supportive and warmhearted. The best thing was the tour around the farm guided by David! We do highly recommend this cottage as an allround perfect experience.

5 star Just returned from a week away with LHH. Have stayed in one of their properties before and found it to be excellent. Went to Fairfield in Inveraray, which was a nice property, but unfortunately suffered from a hot water/heating failure. Even though it was Easter Monday Wynne sorted out a transfer to a superb alternative at Gartocharn (Portnellan Farmhouse). The views were stunning and we had a great week. LHH were great and in going the extra mile for us, we'll definitely be looking to holiday with them again.
