Property information

Luxurious, 5-Star, Ardlarach Lodge is situated in a spectacular location looking down the Sound of Luing and westward to the beautiful isles of Scarba and Lunga. Only two and a half hours drive from Glasgow airport and a mere 30 minutes drive from Oban, this is a perfect getaway, even for just a weekend break. It is regarded as one of the most accessible islands off the coast of Scotland with a regular ferry operated by Argyll and Bute Council running every half hour - and no need to book! Yet this short ferry journey transports you to an idyllic haven where you can totally relax and recharge.

The Lodge was the former Head Shepherds house which has been totally refurbished and renovated in to provide the ultimate luxury in self catering.

Luing is a wonderful place to visit. The island only measures 6 miles long and 2 miles across. This enables a relatively car fee holiday if you choose. The stunning views from all round the island make walking the various coastal paths and trails so pleasurable. Cullipool is the largest village on the island and it is a very picturesque setting with its historic white cottages and a dedicated Atlantic Islands Museum and visitor centre with cafe. The Isle of Luing has not changed much over the centuries and when you step ashore here, you will feel as if you have stepped back in time. The lush green pasture and the abundance of wildlife make this a dream vacation for nature lovers. In Spring, the island is carpeted in primroses, bluebells and later with wild iris.

Seafood is usually easy to come by so that you can enjoy lobster, scallops and prawn. The island shop provides enough of a range of foods to top up during the week but, with Oban just 30 minutes drive, a supermarket shop is easy.

There is something about islands that captures the imagination and Luing will certainly not disappoint.

Finally, we cannot speak of Luing without mentioning the famous Luing Cattle. The Luing breed was famously bred by the Cadzow brothers at Ardlarach, bringing together two great beef breeds - the Beef Shorthorn and the Highlander. Second and third generation Cadzows now live at Ardlarach full time and farm the island and you will see their beautiful animals during your stay.

We stayed with our daughter and two friends for a week. The house was spacious, clean, warm, comfortable and a delight to stay in. The setting is idyllic with panoramic views over Black Mill Bay and the sound to the islands of Scarba and Lunga with Jura in the distance. The house really is a home from home and as well as, or better, equipped than most family homes, we did not want for anything or feel that anything was lacking. Thoughtfully, there was a bowl of fruit, plus milk and tea waiting for us on arrival. Tooti made us very welcome and has given the house a very special feeling, even putting binoculars in the sun room to help enjoy the views and wildlife. The area is quiet and walker-friendly, the roads are good and easy to take a wheelchair or pushchair along. The hills are of moderate height and easy to navigate away from the tracks to enjoy the views to the west and to catch the sunset over the sea and small islands in the direction of Mull. Wild flowers, orchids and cotton grass abound on the slopes overlooking the sea. We saw an otter in Black Mill Bay near the old jetty, seals near Cullipool, deer and a fox about a mile north of Ardlarach Lodge. Luing cattle and sheep roam the area giving it a special feel. A boat trip down the sound and around Lunga with Alistair from Cullipool was particularly enjoyable. We only left the island twice in the week, just walking around and enjoying the peace, looking at the flowers and wildlife, taking pictures and coming back to the comfortable house – bliss!

Myself and my extended family had an amazing, relaxing time at Ardlarach Lodge for a week (March 2015). Even though the weather wasn't great it was a treat to be in a location so beautiful and in a house that we all loved. Ardlarach Lodge has everything you would need for a luxury self catering break. The little touches are what make it so special, not to mention the generous and friendly hosts Tooti and Shane. Their two dogs Mollie and Tasha are also a brilliant company if you need some canine companions. The furnishings and paintings in the house are simply beautiful, comfy beds, crisp linen and a well kitted out kitchen. The Isle of Luing is like stepping back to a time where life is about simplicity and just appreciating what nature has created. The island is a special place that I can only describe as a piece of heaven.

Ardlarach Lodge is a holiday home that has it all. A very friendly welcome, lots of space, stunning views, comfy beds and a really relaxing atmosphere. We stayed for a week and wanted for nothing - the kitchen is so well equipped that we had no trouble preparing the lobster that we bought from the local pier. There is a lovely coastal walk on the doorstep and the garden was large enough for croquet. (Equipment provided!) The large porch is a lovely place to sit for a coffee and we even watched a pod of dolphins playing in the bay from there. The location is idyllic - plenty of exploring to do and we enjoyed meals out at the Atlantic Centre close by in Cullipool and at The Oyster Bar in nearby Easdale. We would definitely return to this smashing spot.

Just a quick note to say we really enjoyed our stay and that we have already recommended Ardlarach to several friends. We are seriously considering booking again for next year, probably around the same time. Thanks again, Andrew, Jane, Ellie and Eve.
  • Sally Gale
We just wanted to thank you both for a wonderful week at Ardlarach Lodge. We adored the house and are planning to replicate it when building our own home in Scotland so please take that a giant compliment! I first visited Luing over 20 years ago and it was great to be back and to realise how beautiful the island is all over again. We had a great time on our much needed break and it was lovely to meet you both, we will be back - soon!
  • Gillespie
Thankyou for a fabulous 4 days. We felt welcomed, relaxed and de-stressed from the moment we arrived. Already planning our next visit.
  • Neil
Brilliant. Ideal R.I.B. Base. Super boat trips. Great weather. Thankyou.
  • Kate
Fantastic house. Love Luing. Explore the island, you'll love it too!
  • Jeremy Gaines
The luxury of being the first to enjoy this marvellous house. the silence and the lack of excitement. Simply gazing at the ever changing view of Cruach Scarba. A perfectly equipped kitchen. Looking forward to the cows playing follow my leader to the beach every evening. The dilemma : wanting to recommend it to everyone and wanting to keep it secret.
  • Liza and Bill
The house is brilliant. What a fabulous user friendly design; we had a wonderful holiday but the highlight was the restful nature of the house and my trip on a boat to Scarba. Thanks again.
