More information about Old Salmon Bothy

Property information

The Old Salmon Bothy is a creative renovation, newly completed in May 2013. This sweet cottage sits snugly against a sandstone outcrop which protects it from the north winds. The decked patio, accessible from the living area, provides a lovely place to relax and watch the ever-changing patterns on the sea across the Moray Firth, home to bottlenose dolphins, seals, porpoises and the occasional minke whale. Fisherman can sometimes be seen checking their creels.

The cottage is insulated and has double glazing and a wood burning stove as well as modern electric heating; so cosy in all seasons. Adjacent to the cottage is a slipway which could be used to launch kayaks or a small boat. There is private parking for 2 cars.

Portmahomack has a great sandy beach, fabulous views across the Dornoch Firth and a superb restaurant. Originally a fishing village, with a picture postcard harbour, there are now just a few fishing boats working but many pleasure craft.

There is a local shop but just a few miles away is Tain which has two large supermarkets.

Immediately from the door there are coastal walks along the shoreline to the village of Hilton. The terrain is fairly flat and easy to follow for approximately 10 kilometres. Along the length of this walk you will see the remains of other salmon bothies, winches and poles for drying salmon nets, now just relics of bygone days.

Alternatively walk to Tarbat Ness Lighthouse which, painted with wide red and white stripes, is the third tallest in Britain and is now fully automated. It warns sailors, with its flashing light, of the rocky promontory around this area. Tarbat Ness has a dramatic history including an important 11th century Battle of Tarbat Ness when Thorfinn the Mighty (of Orkney) defeated Karl Hundason (thought to be King MacBeth) to claim Caithness and Ross.

We have already been in contact with Ian & Rosemary Paterson to thank them for allowing us the opportunity to stay in their wonderful 'Old Salmon Bothy'. With heavy hearts we left having had a lovely relaxing week enjoying everything that the bothy has to offer - tranquillity, remoteness, beautiful views, the wildlife and so much more. We live in Forres and on a clear day can see the Tarbat Lighthouse from the A96 when travelling to/from Elgin, we will now look across at the lighthouse with such find memories. For several years we have seen 'The Old Salmon Bothy' in the LHH brochure when we have flown from Inverness airport and we can truly say it exceeded all expectations. It is a place of beauty and they have given new life to an old building with such a tasteful restoration. This is the first time we have used LHH and will definitely come back to you for future bookings. We have already recommended LHH to my mum who has subsequently booked a 'Berryburn' for a family get together Jun 2017 to celebrate her 70th birthday.

Just spent a week in this stunning Bothy which I have to say is one of the best conversions we have ever stayed in. Everything has been thought of to make a small property have everything you need. The outside area was a bonus to sit out and have BBQs and even breakfast watching the sun rise. Ian the owner really cares about people who stay at his Bothy and rang us once we had arrived, the wine, bread and milk etc are very nice welcome touches. We saw some seals but no dolphins and met a few dog walkers which was perfect for our mad springer to have a run with their dogs. Great having the large car parking area but I would suggest there could have a rope or chain put there so that when you go it you can put this across the area as we came back a few times to cars parked in it, dog walkers and fisherman. We will definitely come back and stay here again as there is more to see and do for just one week and it was a pleasure staying in such a remote and beautiful setting, thank you Ian.

Stayed at the Bothy 1st week in September 2016 & have got to say what an ingenious thought to turn it into a holiday home in a fantastic location. After spending many years going abroad on holiday, being a Scotsman you tend to forget what lies on your own doorstep. Very lucky with the weather & saw the dolphins go by on a couple of occasions. The location is perfect for walkers & not too far from local attractions. Will definitely be back.

We have spent the most wonderful week in this delightful bothy. We saw dolphins twice swimming by. The bothy has everything you need, and is a very high standard. Ian the owner was an absolute delight. The bothy really is right on the beach and we loved walking our dog every day, and our evening walk to Tarbetness lighthouse. We will most certainly return in 2017.

My wife and I, plus the dog had the most fantastic week in the most beautiful house in the perfect setting, I could go on saying how fabulous the house was etc a truly special place. My wife had always wanted to see dolphins and on the last day we spotted them passing the end of the slipway, fantastic!! I would recommend this for a quiet relaxing holiday with lovely walks along the beach, doggie heaven, thanks.

Home again, we had to conclude that the Old Salmon Bothy is on top of the list of Scottish houses we visited over the past 15 years. And we won't hesitate a second to recommend it to friends. The Old Salmon Bothy was everything we hoped for, even the weather was very kind to us. Thanks to your advice the golf was great at Tain, where we played twice, Golspie and Fortrose and Rosemarkie (x2). Thanks for saving the Old Salmon Bothy! We hope to return in 2016...

This is a wonderful place for a get away from it holiday! The cottage which has been very well thought out in its renovation and uses literally evry inch of space sensibly. It is at the end of a tiny road that ends at the jetty. The only people to travel down the road are those wanting to walk along the beach ( a couple of cars a day in April when we visited). There are lovely walks from the door ( either along the beach or up to the lighthouse). The cottage is actually 3 miles from Portmahomack where there is a shop and about 10miles from Tain where there are supermarkets and eating places). The cottage has a table and chairs for the patio which aren't shown on the website photos, where it would be great to sit in warm weather and watch out for birds and dolphins. ( We saw dolphins on the lighthouse walk.) Cottage is very warm and cosy and comfortably furnished with good quality bedding.

My husband and I stayed in the Old Salmon Bothy for 7 blissful days.Nothing can prepare you for how special the location, the charm and quality of the renovation and the over all sense of truly being on holiday. The views are spectacular and one gets the feeling of being on a boat for every window has a sea view.We adore the OSB and have already recommended this lovely respite to family and friends. It is a photographer's dream and a couple's romantic paradise. Jennifer & David Samson

We stayed here in August 2013 - to escape the crowds during the summer holidays and to enjoy some quality 'us' time. The Old Salmon Bothy was the perfect tonic. It has been beautifully designed and furnished and is a genuine 'get away from it all' destination. We loved roaming the beach - watching the seals and herons. We had the place all to ourselves for the whole week - hardly seeing another soul in the 7 days. In August! It's a wonderful little oasis of serenity in our increasingly busy world. Portmahomack is very welcoming and this is a great place to tour the Black Isle and Dornoch. The creators of the bothy are to be congratulated on developing a place of beauty. Thank you. We stayed in the Salmon Bothy the first week of September. We enjoyed the beautiful location and the lovely, comfortable house. It was very quiet and peaceful. As welcome there was bread, milk, cookies and a bottle of wine in the house. Very caring. We saw the seals every day and also some Dolphins swim by. The environment, we explored by car and we have seen lots of beautiful things. The weather was also good so we had a lovely unforgettable vacation. We hope to stay once again at this unique place and we surely recommend it to people who like the peace and the beauty of nature.

My husband and I were lucky enough to be the first guests at the Salmon Bothy earlier this year. The Bothy is a lovely place to stay, right on the beach with fabulous views of the sea and the far coast. The Bothy itself is a very nice place to stay indeed. It's extremely comfortable for 2 and is much more spacious than it appears in the photos. It is an interesting and sympathetic conversion of an old building and the standard of decoration is extremely high. Fabrics and pottery from the local Anta factory and are a particularly nice touch. This is an ideal spot for peace and quiet but at the same time, within a reasonable driving distance of the services in Tain. It is also great for wildlife spotting. We saw lots of birdlife whilst we were there as well as seals, and had great fun rock pooling and strand line combing. We would thoroughly recommend the Bothy to anyone who loves being close to the sea and is looking for peace and quiet in a beautiful spot.
