Property information

Formerly a fisherman's cottage but now refurbished to a very high standard and well deserving of its 4-star award, Thistledown Cottage retains period features and enjoys a wonderful setting with superb sea views over the North Sea. Set in the tiny hamlet of Cove, a picturesque harbour is just a short walk from the cottage via a fascinating tunnel carved through the cliffs. Here you will find a sheltered sandy beach, which is ideal for bathing and picnicking in the summer months, or exploring at any time of the year.

Close to the cottage are many coastal walks, with the famous Southern Upland Way running nearby. Thistledown Cottage is ideal for exploring the miles of deserted golden sands and secluded rocky coves that make up the stunning Berwickshire and Northumberland coastline. The cliffs at nearby St Abbs are not only fascinating geologically but also form part of a designated nature reserve and are the prime breeding grounds for thousands of seabirds and seals.

For sport lovers, some of Scotland's most challenging golf courses are nearby - North Berwick, Luffness, Gullane, Muirfield, Archerfield and Dunbar. There is a diving centre at St Abbs and surfing at Coldingham or Pease Bay, with facilities for many other sports, including cycling, fishing and riding.

Local amenities can be found at nearby Cockburnspath. Berwick upon Tweed, Eyemouth and Dunbar offer more extensive facilities, including supermarkets, restaurants, pubs and swimming pools. Local country inns further inland offer excellent food and wine.

A short train journey from Dunbar will take you straight into the heart of Edinburgh with its well-known and vast array of visitor attractions year through.

Thistledown Cottage has recently been refurbished and is full of character. There is a decked area where you can sit and enjoy uninterrupted views over the North Sea - an ever-changing seascape. There is also space to sit in a sheltered sun trap in the almost enclosed courtyard, which this and three other cottages surround. There is off-road parking for one car comfortably and further parking is available 20 metres from the cottage.

Cove itself is a quiet spot with no through traffic and the sandy beach and lovely rock pools are accessed by a short walk through a 'secret tunnel'. A wonderful coastal walk is along the cliff paths to Pease Bay, where there are extensive sandy beaches.

The many castles and mansions, historic sites and gardens are too numerous to name but a few - Tantallon Castle, Alnwick Castle. Manderston and the Holy Isle of Lindisfarne - all in easy reach for days out.

We are sure you will find a multitude of things to fill a weekend, a week or even longer! It's not only the welcome pack which awaits your arrival - this beautiful coast, and Thistledown Cottage, extend a warm invitation to explore, relax and enjoy!

We just returned from an amazing weekend at Thistledown Cottage, I can't praise too highly the cottage and the warm welcome and amenities. A welcome bottle of Prosecco, and welcome milk, jam, marmalade, etc make everything so hassle free. The cottage itself is delightful with highest quality fittings, and great heating, with the option of a roaring coal or wood fire. Lots of interesting places to visit either as walks along the cliff tops, Heritage in Dunbar, or as we did head for St Abbs to see grey seals and their pups. But by far the biggest commendation goes to owner Melanie and her attention to detail, Christmas trees, handmade Christmas decorations, and absolutely every need re comfort, preparation seen to in advance. The Cottage was absolutely spotlessly clean on arrival, and comprehensive instructions for everything, ideas for trips, and lots of DVD's, books and board games to fall back on if weather is perhaps a little inclement. To summarise, a lovely cottage, cute beyond belief, with thoughtful caring owners who look after you at every stage from booking to end of stay........many thanks Melanie for a great weekend, will definitely return. Kind regards Alan

We certainly enjoyed our stay at Thistledown, such a lovely property, beautifully furnished throughout. The house was spotlessly clean, absolutely immaculate. A generous welcoming pack of tea, coffee, bread, butter, milk, biscuits etc was much appreciated and meant we could enjoy a cuppa after our drive without having to pop immediately to the shops. (There is a little village shop in the neighbouring village, 5 mins by car and an Asda superstore in Dunbar, 8miles north). The owner has thought of absolutely everything for guests comfort from a glass of sherry to savour whilst sitting enjoying an open fire in the comfortable lounge to a picnic hamper and chairs to enjoy the lovely surrounding area. The broadband was trouble free which was a bonus along with the selection of books. The sea views from the kitchen/dining room and the bedroom are wonderful. Indeed there is nothing negative we could say about this property, it was absolutely first class and we would not hesitate to book again and to recommend to others. The beautiful little harbour to walk to is an absolute must do and indeed the area has easy coastal walks from the doorstep and there are many pretty little villages and towns to visit within short driving distances - or by walking along the coastal routes! The friendly neighbours will give tips on best routes to take, indeed we found every person we met to be most friendly and helpful. To summarise this is a very high quality property maintained to the very highest standards and we thank the owner for our most relaxing and comfortable stay.

Over the past 7 years we have stayed in at least 15 to 20 different cottages, most in Scotland as we love it. I have to say that Thisledown Cottage is one of the best we have stayed in. We loved it and the little extra touches that you offer your guests made it all the more welcoming. A beautiful property. Thank you for making our stay so memorable.

Stayed here last Feb half term for a few days. a lovely cottage very well equipped and comfortable. Lovely views and walks from the doorstep. Great little spot .

Stayed late September, early October for a week and loved this cottage and location. We were lucky with the weather but even if we hadn't been, it would still have been a beautiful place and holiday. The cottage is very comfortable, well equipped, and the location for us with our dogs perfect with the little cove and beach just footsteps away. No hesitation in recommending it to any of our friends and we hope to be back.

  • C & J Neeson, Essex
Blissful, peaceful haven. In over 30 years of self catering rarely seen such a comfortable and well equipped cottage. Perfect in every way - including the surprising weather! Hope to be back.

Have tried hard to think of something not to like! Beautiful cottage that was presented immaculately. Kids have been like a Famous Five scene all week. Can't wait to come back!

This is a delightful cottage in a lovely unspoilt part of the world, the area is unique and ideal for small children, rockpools, beaches and fishing harbours, the house has everything you will need for a true getaway from it all existence, lots of nice villages and towns nearby if the weather is bad, lovely neighbours too.

Situated in a pretty, peaceful spot overlooking the sea. Tastefully furnished and very well equipped. Immaculately clean. I'm very fussy and this is the best self catering cottage I've ever stayed in. Well done to the thoughtful owners!
