More information about Cuan Choluim Chille

Property information

Cuan Choluim Chille (The Sea of St Columba) is set in a commanding position with breathtaking views over Loch Tuath to the islands of Ulva, Gometra (Staffa in between), the Treshnish Isles and out to the Atlantic where Columba sailed. Up the loch, the majestic Ben More mountain is seen. When cloudless sunny days give way to beautiful sunsets and star-spangled skies, what better place to stay than Cuan!

Cuan is a Hebridean/contemporary fusion by award-winning Eco-Arc, which celebrates the views and is environmentally-friendly. The neighbouring house is infrequently occupied and does not impact on the pleasure and peacefulness of Cuan.

Living and dining areas and bedrooms have picture windows with stunning views – even from each bed! The vaulted ceiling in the sitting room gives a lightness and airiness that belies the size of the house.

Cuan’s green credentials include solar panels and wood burning stove with back boiler, with radiators producing carbon neutral hot water and heat. It's also equipped with electric radiators and immersion giving guests a choice. The house is comfortable and contemporary with solid oak furniture throughout, relaxing seating and quality mattresses on all beds.

Located in a National Scenic Area it is midway between the white shell-sand beach at Calgary and boats to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles from Ulva Ferry. Walks and wildlife are literally on the doorstep! Picturesque Dervaig is the nearest village and has a pub serving hearty food and a fine restaurant - Am Birlinn. Or in summer, sail across to the Boat House café on Ulva for Ulva oysters and Guinness! Colourful Tobermory (aka Balamory) has many interesting and useful shops and several eateries.

Lovely walks can be enjoyed from the cottage, either up the hill and over the open moorland, or down a track to the sea and a little used jetty. Bird watching is rewarded with sightings of common and less common sea birds, and this coast is noted for its otters.

We have just completed our first trip to Mull and it has been amazing. Cuan was a wonderful base - very well equipped, comfortable, well designed, and beautifully presented. This lovely house is in a great location and has beautiful Eas Fors waterfall a few minutes drive in one direction, and the lovely black beach at Torloisk in the other. Best of all is the view from the property which is simply stunning, rain or shine - and we never tired of watching the sun and the shadows fall across Ben More, the sea, and the Isle of Ulva - certainly memorable, indeed quite perfect.

Without a doubt one of the best holiday homes we have stayed in. In fact did not want to leave a review as did not want anyone else to know about the cottage. Superb Views,Ultra Clean,Comfy,Everything Incuded. Everything in this cottage is top of the range equipment. Superb. Will deff be back again...and again..and again.
  • Irvine Smith
A special thank you, firstly, to Trisha who looks after the house. An immaculately clean and tidy holiday cottage! The views are indeed unforgettable, and these huge windows are a delight! We felt that even the website photos did less than full justice to the scale of the main living area, and also loved the woodburner for the first week of our fortnights stay, when the weather was a trifle variable! A very special mention also of the fishmonger in Salen! The scallops were colossal, and the salmon, we thought was our best ever! Five stars at least!

On behalf of my family I would like to thank you very much for the wonderful week we spent at Cuan - week commencing 7th April. Your cottage is absolutely first class and one of the best self-catering properties we have ever stayed in. With thanks & best wishes, Carol Kirby
