More information about Westerkirk Mains

Property information

Elegant but comfortable best describes Westerkirk Mains, which is a spacious and light Georgian house situated in an unsurpassed location in this most beautiful part of the Scottish Borders. However, Westerkirk Mains is also a very family friendly house with a play room and a children's sitting room with TV and DVD player. Adults can enjoy the 40 inch screen TV and BluRay player in the drawing room and for the musically inclined a tuned, upright piano is now installed (2014).

The house is a very welcoming and homely house which will appeal to all ages. Bedrooms are well proportioned and most enjoy wonderful views. There is a ground floor bedroom with a shower room close by which is ideal for the elderly or less abled members of the party.

Outside, the extensive gardens are the perfect place to enjoy ball games and there is a 12 foot trampoline with enclosures. The level lawns offer some space for ball games or just for having a wonderful garden party on those balmy Scottish evenings!

The River Esk flows gently past the bottom of the extensive garden and guests can arrange fishing on this stretch of the river. (Fishing must be by fly only and there is a daily permit available). The river runs into the open sea and therefore may attract sea trout and salmon. Fishing is available for four rods per day at £10 per rod, per day. This is arranged by the farm manager. Children can 'dabble' for free.

The owners maintain a clipped pathway running along the river bank for some distance: here are planted some unusual and rare trees, as well as fine oak, beech and birch.

The gardens are well maintained with huge lawns to the front and side of the house which make a lovely setting for picnics or for just relaxing and reading. Anglers have found the large lawn ideal for practising their casting skills!

The interior of the house is warm and well maintained with a traditional drawing room and dining room, a well-equipped kitchen and comfortable well-proportioned bedrooms - all tastefully decorated and furnished in keeping with the style of house. The dining room seats 16 at one table and so is perfect for entertaining.

This is ideal cycling and walking country, whether for a long and strenuous climb through the hills of Eskdale, or a pleasant stroll along country lanes. There are attractive villages with inns and churches, and Carlisle is only a 50-minute drive, and Edinburgh just over a 2-hour drive.

The area is rich in history and archaeology, from the prehistoric sites to the fortified castles and towers that bear testimony to the frequent border disputes of the past.

There are gardens and historic houses to visit, and the fascinating Samye Ling Tibetan Buddhist Temple six miles away where visitors are welcome.

For the very enthusiastic cyclists, the Innerleithen tracks and Glentress courses are less than an hour's drive north.

On Fridays, usually about 4.45-5pm, from mid April to mid October an ice-cream van will stop when requested to do so by guests at the house putting a sign at the road end.

Westerkirk Mains is highly recommended for those who seek tranquillity in beautiful surroundings but with ease of access to the north and the south but require a house suited to extended family living in terms of space and interest.

We were delighted with Westerkirk Mains , so beautifully and comfortably furnished and with an amazing amount of equipment in the kitchen! We had a really good week celebrating our Diamond wedding with our children and grandchildren, who all seemed to think we should come again! The house was comfortably warm at all times , though we would have loved to have an open fire in the sitting room! The piano was appreciated by our three teenage grandsons who all play. Nearby neighbours might have also have heard one of them on the bagpipes - my special treat! We all loved watching the lambs and the splendid isolation of the property.

We thorougly enjoyed our week at Westerkirk Mains. The family loved the house and the flexibility it offered: spaces for everyone. We also appreciated the outside space which was well used by the young people and enjoyed meeting Mrs Morris and learning a bit about the property. Having the ASDA delivery was great and did make life easier. We have never been disappointed in an LHH house.
  • Susan Smith
We were a party of 12 who had the most amazing time at this property. The house was warm and welcoming when we arrived to celebrate my 50th Birthday. The bedrooms accommodated all our party well and my guests all commented on how comfortable the beds were. The house was furnished with everything you could possibly need and the grounds were amazing. We held an "Old School Sports Day" in the garden for my birthday and enjoyed walks along the river each day. All in all we had such an enjoyable and relaxing week in the most beautiful setting. The owner was very accommodating and we shall definitely be back. Thank you also to LHH for making this booking such an easy process.
  • Alec
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house was very comfortable and, despite the poor weather, was always warm. Equally important was that we found it a very practical house with a large vestibule for the wet clothes and muddy boots and three different sitting rooms to accommodate the different activities you might expect considering that there were 14 of us with an age range from 2 to 72!! All in all an excellent property which we would thoroughly recommend to anyone. I should also say that I have been very pleased with everything that LHH have done in managing our booking. Thanks for your help and don’t be too surprised if you hear from us again!
  • David Watson
Wonderful house full of character but very cosy and comfortable.Beautiful surroundings and a great garden leading to a lovely river walk which both children and dog loved. Definitely recommend to friends.Jackie Morris and Neville were both very attentive/welcoming.

My family stayed here for New Year 06/07 and had a fabulous time - the house is perfect, with plenty of space, and the location is ideal. It really made our New Year!
