Property information

Looking for a romantic holiday cottage with sea views, log fire and 4 star award? You will be delighted on arrival at this very unique and personalised Hebridean Black House where all the little special touches make for a warm welcome and relaxing stay. The cottage is located on the west coast of Lewis and Tolstachaolais is a pretty Hebridean village by the sea. It is amazingly light and wonderfully comfortable.

Tigh Bhisa (pronounced ‘Tie-Veesa’ and meaning the House of ‘Bisa’ Macdonald, the nickname of the Macdonald family who have been tenants for over 250 years on this one croft) is a high-quality renovated Blackhouse on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, providing 4-star luxury accommodation for two.

The owners have put a great deal of thought into ensuring you feel at home in this gorgeous property; as well as a kitchen equipped for a creative cook, indoor clogs and hand-made soaps are also provided.

Set down a side road in a quiet village, the cottage, with its six-foot-thick stone walls, solid fuel stove and underfloor heating, makes a cosy hideaway in winter, when there’s a chance of seeing the spectacular northern lights. In the endless daylight hours of summer, there are superb sandy beaches, wildflower meadows, open moorlands, and rugged cliffs to explore, as well as opportunities to spot the vast variety of bird and animal life.

The Outer Hebrides are a string of islands off the north-west coast of Scotland, and are unsurpassed in their beauty and diversity of natural landscapes and species: few places match their abundance of peaceful, unspoilt habitats. Fewer still have such a rich cultural tradition and human history: the Neolithic settlers of over 6000 years ago being the first communities, as evidenced by the fascinating and well-preserved archaeology – the truly remarkable standing stones of Callanish are older than Stonehenge and pre-date the Egyptian pyramids by a thousand years!

The islands can be reached by flights from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen or Inverness; or by ferry from Uig on Skye to Tarbert, or Ullapool to Stornoway.

Whether your ideal holiday is full of adventure and sport, or perhaps less challenging pursuits, Tigh Bhisa provides the perfect base, and will be a joy to return to after a day’s activities.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Tigh Bhisa. It is a beautifully renovated Blackhouse in the most scenic and peaceful location, perfect for our holiday. The Blackhouse is very well equipped with everything we needed. The decor was really lovely and unique; we liked the oars and golf clubs as curtain poles; very quirky! The underfloor heating I am sure will be very welcome for anyone staying during a cold spell. We were lucky with the weather! Thanks for all the helpful and informative correspondence before the holiday. The directions to the property were very precise so we had no problems finding Tigh Bhisa at all. On arrival we found gorgeous cakes on the table which was all laid out ready for afternoon tea which was a really nice touch!

Everything about the cottage was perfect for 2 people. Clean, warm, comfy, well equipped. We have holidayed in Scotland all our lives but never managed to reach Lewis and Harris. What a week we chose! We celebrated our Pearl wedding this month and the weather was fantastic. Never been on so many beautiful and clean beaches. Even swam at Horgabost and Huisinis Brilliant. Watched eagles. Cottage is really well situated to allow day visits on both Lewis and Harris. Thanks for a great holiday.

This is a warm, comfortable house which has been renovated to a very high standard. It is very well equipped and the provision of books about the island and novels based on the island adds to the enjoyment of the holiday. The location is superb. A fantastic base for a holiday on Lewis.

What a wonderful place, the house is interesting, comfortable and superbly equipped. The location is stunning, we were struck by how quiet is was. Highly recommended

This place is absolutely wonderful for a relaxing, restful, beautiful place to be. The cottage manages to be cosy and yet spacious; has a beautiful wood-and-peat fire that you can enjoy any time you want; and when you open your front door you're looking right out to the sea. You're only a few minutes away from the Callenish Stones, and everywhere else is really easy to get to also. Justin and Laura leave a binder full of all the information that you could possibly need, right down to a mechanic if something goes wrong with your car (which happened to me). There's also a lot of info about the island so you don't have to do any research beforehand, just sit down with the binder and read through all the leaflets and travel info! It's the perfect location in so many ways. If you want peace and beauty and a location that is both close to everything and yet secluded at the same time, this is the place. Couldn't recommend it higher.

We stayed at "Tigh Bhisa" 23rd May 2009 for a week. What a wonderful, relaxing off the beaten track gem. The views from the dining table and fire are superb. Laura and Justin are very helpful. We loved the cooks' kitchen, underfloor heaitng to a name a few. of the best bits. There is plenty of seating and the local walks are great. It was at times hard to pull yourself away from such a place. Ruth and Phil
