More information about The School House

Property information

The School House was built in 1876 and was a school for approximately 108 years. Photographs in the house depict its history as the local village school and are fascinating. The School House provides a comfortable and relaxing holiday home for up to eight people, and is ideal for those wishing to enjoy some of Scotland's most dramatic and beautiful areas or those wishing to hill climb, sail, or tour this most picturesque part of the Western Highlands. The steam train (Hogwarts Express) passes close to the house and the chugging and puffing are so evocative of the old days of steam that it is a delight to hear. Just a short distance up the road is a unique cafe which is a restored steam train dining car at Glenfinnan Station. Lovingly restored, and still with tungsten lighting and steam powered heating, you can enjoy good home cooking in delightful surroundings; the views from the carriage are magnificent.

With such easy access to the finest mountain in Scotland and superb ski slopes, outdoor enthusiasts will find activities at all times of the year including the world class downhill mountain biking championships held near Fort William every year. There is plenty of bike/ski storage at the house.

The School House is comfortable for 8 people with 2 log burning stoves and a spacious sitting room well provided with board games and DVDs. The house is situated close to the heart of Glenfinnan Village (hotel and church) so is easy for getting to Fort William or visiting the west coast. However, it is a peaceful house in which to relax and recuperate after exploring this magnificent area.

Glenfinnan is situated on the famous Road to the Isles and is a picturesque Highland village. There are several local attractions, including the National Trust Visitor Centre, the famous Glenfinnan Monument, Loch Shiel Cruises, and Glenfinnan railway station which has a museum and an impressive viaduct. There is also a romantic church overlooking Loch Shiel, just a short walk from the house and two hotels that welcome non-residents.

The famous Jacobite Steam Train (featured in the second Harry Potter film as the ‘Hogwarts Express’) passes through Glenfinnan on its way to Mallaig twice daily in the summer months and is considered to be one of the finest railway journeys in the world.

The town of Fort William ('Outdoor Capital of the UK'), renowned as the location of the UK's highest mountain, Ben Nevis, together with the Nevis Range Ski Centre and downhill mountain bike course, are all within an easy half hour drive. Inverness (Highland capital) to the north and the beautiful Glencoe to the south are both within reasonable reach for a day trip.

The islands of Skye, Rum, Muck, Eigg and Canna can be visited from nearby Mallaig and Arisaig. Arisaig has a picturesque sandy beach that featured in the film 'Local Hero', and is a favourite of children and adults alike.

We had a wonderful time at the Schoolhouse and, considering it was the last week in October, very good weather indeed. We had very little rain and managed to do something every day even with young grandchildren. My wife and I enjoyed the magnificent scenery and had some lovely long walks; what a beautiful part of the world! The house is very well appointed and very comfortable, one of the best holiday houses we have stayed in.
  • Sine McKenna
We have stayed here twice and were very impressed with this property! Besides being located in one of most magnificent spots in the western Highlands, there are two award winning hotels within walking distance of the cottage. Everything we needed was provided, from the open fire in the sitting room, to the right number of bathrooms (3), and a kitchen with every mod con and accoutrement imaginable. We can't say enough about this first class property! We will be back,

Had a fantastic New Year here with friends. Great walks from the front door and also on the beaches at Arisaig and Morar. House comfortable, spacious and warm for a perfect New Year break!
  • Frances Bradley
We had a really lovely few days - the second time we have stayed in the school house. Everything is to a high standard and we would highly recommend this lovely house for a break in the breathtaking Highlands.

We had a fabulous week in October. The house is beautiful and very comfortable. The housekeeping is excellent - it was spotless. It had everything you could possibly want plus three visits from two different stags in the garden. We could have easily stayed much longer. Our family ranged in age from 11 years old to 71 years old with everything in between and it was enjoyed very much by everyone. Thank you very much - we will hopefully return before long.

The house was absolutely amazing, location in the most scenic countryside I have ever experienced. What a wonderful place to stay on my first visit to Scotland, couldn't have asked for a better place. I will have no problems in recommending this house to my family and friends. Anyone wishing to experience the true highlands must stay at this house. Thank you for making our holiday a very enjoyable one indeed.
  • Clive Harris
Lovely House in a perfect location. Have been visiting the area for over 50 years and never tire of the scenery. The drive over Rannoch Moor and through Glencoe must rate as one of the best drives in the world. Mallaig has certainly changed over the last 50 years, so has the road to get there.

A note to say what a super time we had last week at the School House, Glenfinnan. Please pass on our appreciation as we found the house to be perfect for our needs; the accommodation was superb, both in furnishing and the very high standard of cleanliness and housekeeping. The location was excellent both for walking (our main objective) and for getting about on the train and bus, even the weather was kind to us! Thank you again.
  • Lesley Walker
Fabulous house for a perfectly relaxing break. The children ran up the bank daily to wave to the passing steam train on its way to Mallaig. We made the journey ourselves - absolutely breathtaking.
