More information about Kellan Mill

Property information

Locally regarded as occupying one of the most beautiful positions on the island, Kellan Mill offers a wonderfully comfortable and robust holiday house for up to seven people.

The house has been a family home for many years and has the patina of well lived in comfort and charm associated with rustic older houses.

This is a former 19th-century mill, now a holiday cottage with the feel of a 'hobbit house'! Entering through an atmospheric, arched, wooden door, you arrive in a flagged entrance hall with small church-style windows and beamed ceiling. Below is the main living area and above are bedrooms - all enjoying the most panoramic views of the sea and Ben More. The dining table has been fashioned from the original millstone and seats seven people comfortably - being positioned in the bay of the sun room with its spectacular sea views, meals are set to become lengthy affairs!

Sitting on the seashore overlooking Loch Na Keal and over to Ben More (the only Munro on Mull) the house has stunning views, and being sited on the shore-side of a quiet road means children can wander down to the shore from the house so supervision is necessary.

The west coast of Mull is especially attractive and is well worth exploration, from the Ross of Mull in the south with its spectacularly pink granite rocks, to the sparkling white sands of Calgary Beach in the north.

The Isle of Ulva can be visited for a day, where an exhilarating walk around this car-free island can be finished off at the Boathouse Café where you can enjoy a plate of local oysters and a glass of Guinness!

Visit the holy island of Iona and walk its peaceful shores to understand why the Celtic saints chose this as their home.

Visitor comments

  • Mr Phillips
Date visited Feb 2016. The most positive comment I can make is that this property is in a great location and has a magnificent view. The dining room is a lovely room to eat and take advantage of those views. However please be aware that the property is very rustic. Many of the fixtures and fittings are old and jaded. During our stay the broadband did not work at all. The owner is aware of problems with broadband but does not make this clear in the property description. LHH Note: We are advised that there is to be Superfast Broadband on Mull by June 2016.The problem with the Broadband was identified as related to the weather conditions and problems in the area. Owner Note: The broadband signal is totally outwith my control, and as I said it can be impacted by the weather which is again outwith our control. I responded immediately on my return and a three day response from the Mull phone guys is pretty prompt considering at the time there will have been a number of houses with not even a phone line working as a result of the very severe weather Mull experienced. We had a broadband failure in the centre of London recently ! And that was not weather related.

July / August 2010 our "3rd" stay at Kellan Mill, its like an addiction. The resident otter did us proud on this visit, eating a fish on the shore right in front of the house whilst we ate fresh scallops (from the local fishmonger in Salen) watching from the conservatory. We explored the South of the island on this visit spending a day across on Iona which is steeped in Scottish history, being the burial place of many a Scottish King. The weather? who cares its a fantastic place to visit.

July /August 2008, our second visit to Kellan Mill. Once again a very enjoyable stay. This is the wildlife watchers paradise, otters on the shore and sea eagles within a mile, plus much more. We went on the boat trip to Fingal's Cave on Staffa and saw the fantastic volcanic rock formations, this is a must see in your lifetime. Steve + Elizabeth Wilburn and family

We stayed July/August 07, it was brilliant. The location and views are spectacular, so much wildlife to see. I even caught sea trout in the loch right in front of the cottage. It so good we are going back next year!
  • Stephen Swan
Excellent house, brilliant location, and promised otters actually materialised (July 2007)
  • Liz Hutton/K McKeown
Stayed here June 25th for one week and didn't want to leave. Wonderful house, very comfortable and quaint. Access to beach is ideal for young children with no road to cross. Lots of bird variety and sea shore life to watch. A truly great holiday house.
