More information about Geddes House

Property information

Situated in a 1,000-acre Highland estate, Geddes House is a lovely old Georgian family home set in extensive wooded grounds on the southern side of the Moray Firth. The house was built in 1780 by George Mackintosh, a direct ancestor of the present owners who have made the house available for large family holidays.

There is plenty of scope for walking, visiting historic sites and enjoying the lovely Scottish countryside, and trout fishing is available on the tranquil and very beautiful lochs within easy walking distance of the house. This is a family home, and guests are invited to make it their own home for the duration of their stay.

The gardens and grounds are large, and the estate can offer fishing, stalking and shooting in season.

Nairn, just a short drive from the house, has one of the area's finest sandy beaches, and it is also home to one of Scotland's championship golf courses. Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, is only a 20-minute drive, and regular flights from London land at its airport.

We had a very enjoyable and successful week in Geddes House. We arrived at 4pm on the shortest day of the year to find the house with lights on, a bedecked Christmas tree and wood-fire on in the central hall, and tea set and newly baked cake on the kitchen table. The house was toasty warm and very welcoming after a long drive. We were a family group of 17, ranging in age between 6 and 74 years and the house and grounds were ideal for us all. The house was comfortable and warm and had the feeling of a home -not too grand that you would be scared to touch anything. The younger kids had fun playing sardines and hide-and-seek, and the men had many sessions at the billiard table. If you felt like a quiet spot to sit and read there was always the morning room or the drawing room. We also enjoyed walking round the estate, watching red squirrels and the many birds in the garden. And the kids played in the tree house and loved feeding the pigs and chickens. A very happy and memorable Christmas holiday.

We stayed this year for two weeks at Geddes House with a large group of families and friends. The house is ideal for relaxing holidays with children. It is cosy with an old-fashioned touch. We enjoyed very much the great salon with the open fire. For the children there was a lot to do and see outside the house for example pigs and hens and a tree house.

Geddes House is set in a beautiful location. The grounds and especially the excellent treehouse kept our group's kids very happy for a week. Mrs M-W was very welcoming as was the whole housekeeping team. The house very much retains its feel as the family's ancestral home with references down through the generations. The overall comfort and cleanliness could however be improved by replacing some of the oldest beds, carpets and sofas. All in all, we enjoyed an excellent week and take away great memories from Geddes.

We had a fabulous stay at the house which is perfect for large house parties. Elizabeth contacted me before our stay to say that as it was New Year and dark early they would try to get the house ready for us to arrive in the daylight at 2pm. In our over 20 years of going away at this time of year we have never been afforded that courtesy, which was lovely and very welcomed by all. Also, on arrival, there was tea, milk and cake laid out and a huge tray of estate eggs on the kitchen table. Again, we have never had this before, and it was a lovely touch. Elizabeth then popped in later on to make sure everything was in order. She was absolutely lovely, very welcoming and accommodating. The house was amazingly warm (the warmest yet!), there were lots of different rooms to use so plenty of space for all. As it is a family home it had a really homely feel and was well equipped. We also had our fireworks on Hogmanay which was lovely too. All in all, a 10/10, cannot fault it. LHH were, as usual, very good to deal with. We have used you many times before and have always had a good service, so thank you for that. During our years away we have used many other agents and LHH are up there with the best of them.

We (17 people) had a superb weekend at Geddes House. We were there for a family get together and it was perfect for that. The proximity to the airport made it easy for those, who live down south, to get there. The playroom complete with toys was great for the maurading one year old twins (this is a well equipped house for children of any age) The huge dining room was great for evening meals The "boys" loved the billards Croquet was popular with everyone. The weather was unbelievably good but even if it had not been there was plenty of space for us all. The owners were very helpful.

What a wonderful house - felt like a home. We had a great week - 15 people aged 11 - 78 and one dog, all happy! The snow was all around when we arrived, but the roaring fires (with coal and wood supplied to our door) kept us warm and cosy. We ate on the Geddes farm produce - I thoroughly recommend all the meat and the wonderful eggs. The snooker table / billiards table and table tennis table were very well used and much appreciated as was the grand piano! We enjoyed nairn beach and the local nature reserve, Culloden, the whisky trail (Speyside), Brodie castle and other local attractions. The highlight for us was an open air production of Macbeth in Elgin cathedral ... not to be forgotten. A memorable holiday
