WENTWORTH HOUSE - PORTMAHOMACK - NR TAIN - ROSS-SHIRE
Large family-friendly, self-catering holiday home in Northern Scotland - sleeps 16
Whether you are looking for the classic 'bucket and spade' holiday, or a relaxing golfing holiday, Wentworth House will not disappoint. Large enough to sleep two to three families, this child-friendly accommodation is situated on the north-east coast of Scotland close to the golf course and just 2 minutes from the fine sandy beach and safe bathing of Portmahomack.
Built in 1802 as the Manse to Tarbat Church (now an Archaeological Discovery Centre and site of a Pictish Monastery of the 8th century thought to be as important in its day as the settlement on Iona), Wentworth House is a large well-appointed family holiday home in a coastal location hard to beat. This is the oldest house in Portmahomack and benefits from being just a stroll from the sandy beach, just one of many fabulous beaches in northern Scotland. The house is south facing across rolling countryside and sits on its own.
Five minutes' walk from your lodgings will bring you to a hotel, pub and local shop, also the renowned 'Oystercatcher' restaurant which specialises in seafood dishes using local, freshly-caught produce. A three mile walk out to Tarbat Ness Lighthouse (third tallest in Scotland) where magnificent sea views can be enjoyed makes a pleasant evening stroll with the chance to observe dolphins which pass through this stretch of water occasionally.
Golfers of all abilities can enjoy a game, from the professional at Royal Dornoch or Tain, to, for the less ambitious, Portmahomack golf course which is very close to the house.
Bird watchers, at different times of the year, can hope to see: redwings, fieldfares, manx and sooty shearwaters, gannets, auks, terns, dippers, grey wagtails, tree creeper, wood warblers, buzzards, skuas, siskins, goldcrests, osprey, peregrines, hen harriers, knotts, dunlins, whooper swans, lapwings, mute swans and many, many more!
The accommodation itself is comfortable and homely and is set in a 2-acre garden which includes a large walled garden which is grassed and ideal for ball games. Kids and dads will be delighted to know that there is a football net at one end.
The owner has striven to make this an easy house to holiday in with children and has provided toys and games, teddies and dolls to ensure that children feel welcome.
Inverness airport is only an hour's drive and there is a railway station at Tain which is 15 minutes' drive.
For those wishing to see more of the Highlands, the north coast, Orkney and the west coast are all within day trip distance.
The owner occupies an adjacent flat but is careful to ensure that you enjoy maximum privacy and minimum disturbance. She does not wish you to feel restricted in any way.
Catering can be arranged from full week meals to the occasional one-off dinner. Cooks will find the flourishing herb garden useful in food preparation.

Visitor Comments
“Staying at Wentworth House was like visiting good friends. It is warm and welcoming, spacious, comfortable and so well equipped. I am busy trying to think of a reason for another visit! We had a fantastic time, thank you for making that possible.”

“A fantastic house with a great welcome. We stayed with friends and family and everybody loved it, including the children. Lots of room inside the house and a huge garden where the children entertained themselves. Loads to do in surrounding areas with great walks and views. Will definitely stay again.”
Jonathan Boyd & Louise Anger

“A wonderful family ”
Pat and Judy Roper
“Wentworth House really was all we could have wanted. With 11 children between 3 families is was very well equipped and spacious. There were plenty of bathrooms and loos and 7 of the children slept in the attic which was ideal. The beach is an easy walk which all children, aged from 2 to 8 easily managed fully equipped with clobber for playing with. The garden is huge with tons of space for all. It really is the most stunning location with plenty to see and do. We will return. ”
