Romantic Retreats for Valentines
With Valentine’s Day fast approaching romance is not far from everyone’s thoughts. If you really wanted to impress your other half then what could be better than a romantic break away. These are a few of our favourite places, perfect for sharing with that special somebody.
The Old Salmon Bothy sits all by itself, snugly against a sandstone outcrop, right on the shoreline. A decked patio looks right out to sea and you can be lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves. It is remarkably private and your only company may well be the seals and dolphins that are frequently spotted from the patio. A walk along the shoreline will take you to the lighthouse where you can witness spectacular sunsets before continuing on to Portmahomack and the renowned seafood restaurant The Oystercatcher for an intimate dinner for two.
There is something magical about watching the Northern Lights in the Highlands of Scotland, with clear skies and low light pollution, the west coast is one of the best places. Taigh Glas is a stunning architect conversion of on old croft building that has been designed to maximise the panoramic views of the Torridon mountains and over the sea to Skye. Warm and cosy it couldn’t be better for relaxing. It is also the perfect venue for you to prepare that perfect romantic meal for two. What about a lobster direct from the fisherman on the Gairloch pier with some Chardonnay, followed by some indulgent, locally made, chocolate truffles from the Sugar Croft Faerie in Aultbea?
For a picture perfect traditional thatched cottage and a sandy island beach, then the Hebrides is the place to look. For some people, the idea of a romantic break is tranquillity and remoteness and the islands here have that in abundance if you feel the need to get away from it all. You could walk for hours along pristine beaches and never see another person, perfect if you also have a dog with you. Cuir na Bhoir is remarkably modern inside, despite its old fashioned thatched roof, it is cosy at any time of year and you can even see out over the Atlantic without having to get out of bed.
If snow-capped mountains appeal more than beaches then the Cairngorms is the natural place to gravitate towards. Snuggled in the forest, just five miles from Aviemore, Thyme Cottage is a peaceful and calming retreat that has convenient access to dozens of Munros. Looking for a special place to propose? Then how about the summit of one of the highest peaks in the country with stunning views in every direction. For some people romance is all about excitement instead of down time so fortunately there numerous opportunities here to go climbing, biking and skiing. It makes the evening in front of the fire so much more cosy after a long day outside.
A hot tub with a view is a perfect way to leave the stresses of the world behind and a great way to impress your other half. It’s even better with a bottle of champagne and sunset over a Hebridean vista, to share with your beloved. Tamana Cottage is secluded and luxurious and will not disappoint. During the day, you are close to fantastic hill walking areas as well as beaches great for swimming but if you just want to take it easy and slip into the slow pace of island life then the house is remarkably well equipped and you could spend your holiday without needing to drive.
Were it for the location alone then Tigh Bhisa Blackhouse would be an amazing romantic retreat but it comes with a special unique feature for couples. A love seat. Reconstructed in the traditional style, this wooden seat for two has its own stone windbreak to shelter from the occasional island breeze. Step back in time and discover romance the old fashioned way. Indeed, who needs gadgets when you have views to die for and a partner to share them with? Cosy sofas and the distinctive smell of a peat fire will pull you inside when it eventually gets dark.
So whatever you fancy this Valentine’s Day, be it cuddling up on the sofa, a luxurious long lie, or an active weekend away, then LHH have just the property for you to indulge, propose, celebrate or just hang out.
